Two new authors to me (both series set in York/Yorkshire))

My daughter, who devours all things about York and the Yorkshire region, just forwarded me links to two authors of cosy mysteries I am unfamiliar with. One is Helen Cox, who has written the Kitt Hartley Yorkshire Mysteries and the other is Julia Chapman, the Dales Detective Series.

I was going to order and start one, just curious if any of you had read them. I’m in a true British crime drama mode rn! Been binging Unforgotten- two more episodes left in season 5-Annika is up next. Thank goodness football season here is in a lull before the Super Bowl so I can hog the tv on multiple nights!

I have not read them but now that they are on my radar, I will check them out. Thank you!

I love Unforgotten (even after Nicola's departure) and Annika! I will second Jane's rec for Endeavor. I consider that one of the best crime shows out there, and that fact that it's set in Oxford is a plus. Also if you're a Nicola Walker fan, check out The Split, which is about a family of divorce attorneys in London. I loved it since that's what I did before I retired, but it was good in its own right.

And have you watched Sherwood? Definitely binge-worthy. Lesley Manville is a treat to watch!

Just came back to report finding a fun website called Dales Discoveries while I was searching out info on the two authors you mentioned. It has lots of books and authors, and also discusses bookstores in the Dales, like the one in Grassington called The Stripey Badger. ❤️

Oooh mardee thanks for that link! I’ll be sure to share it with my girl, too! ❤️
I love Nicola Walker- my search for her next stop after Unforgotten led me to wanting to watch Annika. Now I will check out The Split (and I also want to see her in Last Tango in Halifax). Based on everyone’s comments, Sherwood and Endeavor sound really due for a look, too!

I agree with Jane. The acting and writing of these shows from the UK is far superior to anything we have over here rn.

Thanks for the intel. Madly in love with Inspector George Gently, Morse, Foyles War, DCI Banks, Vera, Annika, Shetland et all.

50% of me agrees with the OP regarding the writing and acting in British shows.

The other 50% encourages you to watch (via Amazon Prime) the US TV series called BOSCH. Based on author MichaelConnelly's books about LAPD homicide detective Harry Bosch. Actor Titus Welliver is the embodiment of Bosch.

Full disclosure; I worked on the show. Best experience in a nearly 30 year career.

I also want to see her in Last Tango in Halifax.

Oh, I forgot she was in that--I loved that show! And if you watch that, you will need to watch Happy Valley, which starred Sarah Lancashire, who played the other daughter in Last Tango. That's a really good cop show! And the final episode just about blew my mind, it was so good!

Claudia, I agree that Bosch is good although I like the books better. I've read all of Michael Connelly books and love them.

I've read some of the Helen Cox books - I'd describe them as OK but a bit lightweight. There are better authors out there.

Claudia, will do about Bosch. I probably need to broaden my viewing habits for US shows to find some better ones. My husband and I really enjoyed the Lincoln Lawyer series on Netflix. We both said we need to read his books.

wasleys, good to know. Maybe I’ll start with Julia Chapman then. If you know of others (I found out about Ann Cleeves from all of you - I have really enjoyed the books of hers I have read and the Vera episodes we’ve watched).

So nice to have such great suggestions for relaxation hours!

OP here’s Michael’s website.

Lists all of the BOSCH, Lincoln Lawyer, Renee Ballard books in order. He’s been writing for a while.

I enjoy his writing. He describes the good and bad of the City of Angels and surrounding environs. Downtown, the Valley, East LA, Westside, Malibu et al.

I’ve already made note he has another BOSCH novel scheduled for a 2024 November release.

Other past 10 years or so, I've loved both the DI Wesley Petersen books series (set in Devon) by Kate Ellis and the Ruth Galloway series (set in Norfolk) by Elly Griffiths. Ellis' series is more of a traditional police procedural with archaeological/historical side story, and Griffiths's series features a forensic anthropologists who works with the local police (but also features local history as well). Also a Midsomer Murders and Father Brown fan. I have enjoyed the first several seasons of Unforgotten, but have not kept up with it recently.

You could also try JM Dalgleish who is quite a new author (he's only been writing since 2018 and isn't widely know yet). He's written several detective stories based in York, following it up by a series of Norfolk detective stories and is now writing about Scotland. They are gritty stories with a touch of Scandi Noir to them. His books are available from Amazon.

wasleys, JM Dalgleich is a very prolific writer. He's written 24 books since 2018. I found the first book in the Yorkshire series on Amazon, and read the sample, and it definitely caught my interest. Thanks for the info!

lizzy.tilley, thank you for the information on the two authors--they both look very interesting! More good stuff to read!

Claudia, big thumbs up on Michael Connelly and Bosch. I have read him for years and think he’s one of the best writers we have. I was a bookseller for years and was always able to hand sell him. Love the new Renee Ballard character.

My husband and I really enjoyed the Lincoln Lawyer series on Netflix. We both said we need to read his books.

Mustlovedogs, his books are great. I've read them all multiple times. His newest one, which just came out a few months ago, has both Harry Bosch and Mickey Haller in it (with 2 POV). They don't mention this in the Lincoln Lawyer TV series due to issue rights between Amazon and Netflix, but there is a strong relationship between the two. I won't mention what it is but it makes for good reading.😊
