Two Days Outside of London

We are taking Rick's Best of London tour this fall. The tour ends on a Saturday morning and we don't fly out of Heathrow until early afternoon on Monday. We would appreciate suggestions as to what we should do with the time. Two day trips? An overnight trip to a B&B (suggestions appreciated)? Since Windsor is included in the tour, we would not need to see it again. Maybe something that includes Stonehenge or the Cotswolds?

Your choices are endless and impossible to answer without further information from you such as likes and dislikes, interests, previous visits, distance prepared to travel, budget for accommodation (does it have to be a B&B or would a country hotel suffice?), will you have a car or rely on public transport? Who are "we", a couple, a family with kids? Ad nauseum.

We are a group of 4 adults. We will not be renting a car so will need a tour or public transportation. None of us have been to England before and are interested in just a good sampling of the English countryside and any historic sites along the way. It doesn't have to be a B&B, a country hotel would be fine. If we are staying overnight in the country, a distance of up to four hours one way from London would be acceptable. We aren't looking for luxury, just an experience the average traveller can afford.

York, Oxford, Peak District, Durham, Cheltenham, Lyme Regis, even Edinburgh.

Train and bus travel.

With such little time, I think I would stay put in London. I am not sure how long your tour is, but we spent 10 days in London this summer and left a lot on the table still to see. My suggestion would be to spend Saturday in London, checking out things the tour didn't cover and catch a show on the West End. Sunday, you could easily take a train to visit Canterbury and/or Dover if those weren't part of your tour. That could fill your desire to see/be in the countryside while maintaining your base in London. I would want to be in London Sunday night to easily get to Heathrow Monday morning. Are you able to keep your hotel room in London after the tour? Less time changing accommodations means more time doing stuff. The Cotswolds perhaps won't yield much with a single night and only consider Stonehenge if it is a "must see" item for your travelling party.

I would agree with Dani. Stay at your tour hotel. We took this tour last year and loved it. But there is a lot of London it does not cover. Since you are flying out early afternoon, Monday is a wash-time for breakfast and transportation. For Saturday, Sunday I would consider a day trip to Cambridge, just walk around. Another day you can see the British Museum, the Imperial War Museum, get tickets for another show.

Cambridge is an easy and enjoyable day trip. If you like cathedrals, Salisbury is another possibility. Both are easy train trips.
