Twickenham to Salisbury Cathedral to Stonehenge then back to Twickenham

We are planning 6 days in London before departing on a British Isles cruise. I can't imagine spending all that time in London and not going to see Stonehenge. While in that area, I would like to see the Salisbury Cathedral and make a day trip of it.

I thought renting a car would be the easiest, but my husband doesn't want to drive and I'm definitely not going to drive. I'm from the US and we'd be driving on the wrong side of the road, plus it's about a 2-hour drive one way.

Tours are very expensive. I was hoping to find a download for an audio tour if possible.

Any advice for the transportation and the audio portion?

This can be done by taking a train to Salisbury, then the shuttle which goes to Stonehenge and Old Sarum. You could visit Salisbury Cathedral before returning home. Best prices on the train if bought in advance. If you do a search on the forum, there are multiple previous threads within the last year with more details. Can't help with audio guides. We used a guidebook.

Be sure to visit both the Stonehenge and Salisbury Cathedral websites for ticket and other information

Take the train to Salisbury. Check out the Cathedral and take the Stonehenge Tour Bus to Stonehenge. So easy! As I recall it’s an audio tour on the bus, then you explore Stonehenge at your own pace until bus departs. As I recall we had time for lunch along a charming river in Salisbury between exploring the cathedral and getting on the bus tour.

Google Stonehenge Tour to find out the details on the bus tour. That’s what the company is called. It was a delightful day. And not expensive. In our photos at Stonehenge we are also wearing audio lanyards. I think perhaps those were picked up at Stonehenge?

Yes totally agree with the other suggestions to take the train to Salisbury and then the bus to Stonehenge. We did it and it was very convenient. The bus is right at the train station and they took cash only so we had to get cash from the ATM at the train station. I recall walking to the Cathedral and around town and using the bus to go to Stonehenge and old Sarum. Definitely an easy side trip to do on your own even last minute.

Details of the bus from Salisbury to Stonehenge here and bus timetable here.

The cost of the tour includes entry to Stonehenge.

From their website:
Tickets are available to buy in advance online. However, checking the website the buy on line page this morning, it is coming up with the message “Oops! That page can’t be found.” They do have an email address so it may be worth contacting them for information.

[email protected]

Tickets can also be purchased at are Salisbury rail station, Salisbury Tourist information Centre and on the bus.

However, if you buy your ticket from the bus driver however please be aware any transactions over £30 will need to be paid using cash due to contactless limitations.

There is an audio guide available at Stonehenge. From FAQ on their website 'You can download the audio tour free to your own smartphone from the Apple Store or Google Play. Don’t forget to bring your headphones.'

From Twickenham you first take a train to Clapham Junction, then change there for Salisbury (in both directions).

The overall train journey takes a shade under 2 hours, and there are cheaper Advance (train specific) fares for that journey.

The website for the bus may be out of date about the contactless limit- it was raised from £30 to £45 at the height of the pandemic in 2020, then from £45 to £100 a year later. So there is no obvious reason why the bus should be limited to £30.

It may well be out of date information but some bus operators do restrict contactless acceptance to well below the normal payment limit as a result of fraudulent purchase of high value tickets in the past.

Also note that from 2 September there will be a few normal service buses, number #X2 from Salisbury Rail Station to Stonehenge. These will be normal bus fares, currently £2 each way- https://images-salisburyreds.passenger-website.com/downloads/Reds_tt_Route%202_495x148_10pp_0724_v9_PRESS_no%20crops.pdf

Services will extend to Devizes allowing connections to the buses #271 to 273 to Bath

There will be a bus from Bath at 0745 for arrival at Stonehenge 2 hours later via Devizes, and a last service back at 1640, arriving at Bath 2 hours later.

So whole new day trip opportunities.
