Is there a special pass needed to access lifts if one has mobility issues? I will be traveling with a friend who has good / bad days with walking. Regarding Heathrow to the Mayfair area, I'm wondering if a bus might be a better option since we would presumably end at street level. A possible further complication is that we arrive the first Saturday in May which is a bank holiday, and I understand transit strikes could be an issue. We would prefer to avoid a private car or taxi simply to save some $, but could do either if necessary.
All suggestions welcome!
And yes, we will be traveling light; a carryon and personal item each.
Nothing special needed to use the lifts.
Step free access certainly does not always mean it will be a shorter walk. Indeed it may require a longer one to get to and from the lift, especially when this is a retrofit.
If you say exactly where you are going to advice can be more relevant.
Thank you! We arrive at Heathrow on May 4 and need to get to Mayfair, in the area of the Green Park tube station. Walking up/down stairs with luggage is my concern.
Green Park has a lift for the Piccadilly Line.
TfL have a step free map and guide https://content.tfl.gov.uk/step-free-tube-guide-map.pdf
There will be no Underground trains running if the strike goes ahead.
Either use the Elizabeth Line to Bond Street, or National Express Bus to Victoria.
Then hail a taxi for the last short part of the journey.
Thank you for the replies! That is all very helpful information regarding the Green Park station and getting into London if there is indeed a strike that day. I did see the info on step free stations, but was confused by someone who posted a U tube video stating that one needed a special pass. Good to know that isn't the case as we will probably use that station often during our stay.
Then hail a taxi for the last short part of the journey.
I think that Stuart meant to also say that if the tube is shut down you may need patience for this part, especially if it is raining.
Nigel, so true! I think that is just understood :). Might we have better luck at Paddington?
maybe. At least the rank is in a very clear place, just around the corner. No hailing required.
