UPDATE: Trouble booking a affordable triple in London in Dec-Jan., Eurostar to Paris

Greetings,

We'll be in London in late Dec. into Jan. I need a room for 3 as we're traveling with a teenager. We are seniors and have some walking issues so we need to be in a clean place with an elevator or few stairs near the Tube. I've checked hundreds of hotels and can't seem to find an affordable option that's close to the Underground and can handle 3 in a room with a queen bed and twin or 3 twins. The US chains seem to be sold out and I'm guessing it's because our dates cross over New Year's Eve. I"ve spent at least 20 hours online and via emails looking for a place to no avail. I like being near Victoria Station or in Belgravia but no luck. If you have any suggestions, I'm listening. I'm also looking at Knightsbridge.

Also, I have discounts for American hotels as I work for the govt., AARP, etc. It doesn't seem like those work online for European hotels. Is there another way to obtain discounts codes such as these?

Finally, we're leaving London on the Eurostar for a few days in Paris. Would you recommend changing hotels for one night to be close to the train station or just Uber to the train? I'm open to other travel options to get to the train in London.

Thanks,

MOB

Again advise review the Premier Inn chain. Or contact 63 Bayswater and ask if you room 107 still has 2 dbl beds.

Consider the Luna and Simone Hotel. Please check my reply in your other post under Reviews. Good luck

The Luna Simone are sold out and no luck with the Premier chains either. I'm still trying though.

just Uber to the train?

My wife and a good friend (who doesn't like to ride the Undeground) used a regular London taxi to get to the Eurostar from thier hotel.

What is your actual budget per night? Prices are indeed going to be high over New Years.

Does Premier Inn have no availability nat all, or just nothing in your preferred locations?

I assume that you have also checked on AirBNB, yes? I am thinking that two seniors might be just what some hosts are looking for… assuming that you are quiet and not down to party and trash the place. ;-)

Anyway, it’s worth a shot!

Not exactly your direct question but many others on this forum recommend those with more limited mobility use the bus rather than the tube. So you might be able to expand your acceptable locations for accommodations to anywhere you might have reasonable access to a bus stop. Not sure this link will work but we found this map helpful.

chrome-extension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/https://content.tfl.gov.uk/bus-route-maps/key-bus-routes-in-central-london.pdf

If the link doesn't work just google "key bus routes in central london", it is on the Transport for London website.

And not sure what you are expecting for "affordable" but you might consider this I found on booking.com. Nell Gynn House, Sloane Street, SW3 3AX. I lived in this neighborhood in London and it is quite nice. A bus stop is just outside or across the street depending on what direction you are going. Grocery store across the street. Nearby restaurants in South Kensington or Chelsea would be easily accessible. For 7 nights Dec 28 - to Jan 4 it is showing $1843 on booking.com for a triple in a studio apartment there. Or here is the direct link. https://www.nghapartments.co.uk/

The tfl.gov.uk website can help you plan any journey, and you can optimize by choosing "bus only" or "least walking".

Enjoy the planning!

New Years Eve is big in London, which will affect pricing especially for that night. But looking for 28 December to 1 January (4 nights) there are Premier Inns at Euston for £466, St Pancras for £570 and Old Street for £497 as examples- family rooms.

Old Street is on the 24 hour #205 bus route to St Pancras and Paddington and on the City branch of the Northern line, 1 stop from Kings Cross St Pancras- so not a well known district of London (to the tourist) but still convenient- especially if there is a trade off to be made between convenience and cost.

Is the teen under 16? Family rooms at the Premier Inn are for 2 adults and children under 16. If the teenager is 16 or over then you will need 2 rooms.

What is your definition of affordable for London? I just did a search on the Premier Inn website and there are quite a few hotels in the 110 to 140 GBP and it is pretty difficult to fine places for less than that. They aren’t in Belgravia, but you may need to look in other areas to find less expensive accommodations.

I stayed at the Premier Inn St Pancras and it was very convenient for the Eurostar. I would not change hotels for one night.

As to whether to change to a hotel closer to St Pancras, remember that you need to get to the station at least an hour ahead of your departure time. If you are getting a very early train it might be worth staying somewhere close to get a bit of extra sleep. The Renaissance hotel is in the same building as the station, but there are several budget chain options nearby.

Marlin Queen Street apartments offers a one-bedroom apartment with fully-equipped kitchen and sofa bed in the living room for 234 GBP/night for your dates (Dec. 30-Jan. 8).

This is a company that offers serviced apartments in a hotel-like building with reception, etc. They have other locations, but this one is my favorite—-right close to St. Paul’s on a quiet little street just off a main east-west street (Fleet Street, Ludgate Hill, etc.) between the Tower of London and Trafalgar Square. The #15 bus runs along that street, stopping just a block from the apartment, giving you easy access to St. Paul’s, Trafalgar Square, and several Tube stations to travel elsewhere.

This apartment is 2.5 miles from St. Pancras station, so should be a fairly easy taxi ride to your Eurostar train.

Here is a schematic map of the main bus routes through central London. I see the bus has been recommended to you as an alternative to the Tube, and I endorse that recommendation. We much prefer riding the bus around London to descending deep underground for the Tube.

With an apartment, you can save a lot of £££ by stocking food to make your own breakfasts, lunches, and a few dinners if you like.

Recommended time for the Eurostar is 90 minutes prior to departure. I would not bother getting a hotel closer to St Pancras just for that one night if you're staying in central London - and rather than an Uber, I would recommend a black cab, as it has more space for luggage (unless you're traveling light).

Some good suggestions here re affordable accomodation, bur probably best if you define what you mean, in £. You're probably best looking in cheaper areas - Belgravia and Knightsbridge are expensive.

You also need to keep abreast of the minimum check in time of 90 minute at St Pancras.

From October it is currently expected that the new European Union Entry Exit system will be implemented. This will require you to be photographed and finger printed at St Pancras as well (if it happens on time). Eurostar are currently reconfiguring the terminal to be able to cope.

Currently this is an unknown as to whether or not it will further extend the check in process, so require more time again. This will be common with seaports and airports. Seaports are also anticipating extended check in time. As for airports that more just be more to do within the 2 hour check in time.

Greetings,

I just wanted to thank all of you for the great advice. I found a reservation at the Resident Hotel-Victoria that is a good size, price and location for us. I had no luck with the Premiier Inns which were over $900/night. At that price there were lots of choices, but it's just too costly for us. The information about the Eurostar was also very helpful and we'll be booking that ticket soon and watching for the opening of tickets for Big Ben and the WB/Harry Potter Studios.

Thanks again,
mob

That’s great that you’ve found somewhere, but for anyone else reading Premier Inns in central London are available from around £150 for NYE. I wonder if $900 was the cost for the total stay. This is the way Premier Inn show their prices, not per night, when you do a search.

No way PI’s were $900 a night. Heck, a room at The Savoy doesn’t cost $900.

Pleased the OP found a place that met their criteria.

I agree with Helen and Claudia. There is no possibility that a Premier Inn would be charging $900 a night. I paid around $900 when I was there this year, but that was the total for five nights. I'm sure that they were looking at the total price for their stay.

I'll second Nell Gwynn House - I stayed there in 2012 for my honeymoon and it was lovely. It's on the list for our Thanksgiving trip, although we're likely going with another place I found.

I did see NGH on booking.com for a bit of a discount.
