Tricare / Military bases in England

We are planning a trip in May and Covid has resulted in travel insecurities, so I am exploring possible options. Because we are military, I wondered if there were any health clinics that would be covered for our day 2 test, or if we happen to test positive. We both have had covid and are fully immunized, so should be good. Hopefully the requirements will ease up as public health officials come to grips that this is endemic.

My guess would be only if the clinic is on the UK approved list of providers. I doubt UK clinics will accept Tricare, if that’s the question. You could ask the UK providers directly to find out.

If referring to taking the test at a military facility, I’d first check to see if there is a base near where you want to visit and if you could even use its medical facilities since you’re not stationed in the UK. Most bases have status of forces agreements with the host country that’s limit which facilitates can be used by those not stationed in the country. If a clinic would qualify, then you’d need a base or nearby address for self-isolation until the results came back. You may want to contact a base clinic or hospital over there and see what advice it has. It’s possible the clinic might provide testing, but only for PCS personnel. If contracted out to a local clinic, maybe it could provide the local clinic’s information. My guess is you’re still going to have to pay for the test since you need the confirmation code to fill out you passenger locator form.

I would be interested to know what you find out.

As I recall, Lakenheath, Croughton and and Alconbury all have medical clinics for which you'll be eligible per the Tricare directives.
You may want to do a Google search to see if others have been added to the list.

Things will change before May, but the idea of a day 2 test is that (ideally) you don’t use public transport and you head straight to your accommodation where you must self isolate until you get your test results. You need to buy the day 2 test in advance and put this number on your Passenger Locator Forms - suppliers will deliver the test kit to your accommodation.

The idea isn’t that you travel miles to reach an American base for a test! If you are travelling for pleasure rather than on official duty, the British tax payer isn’t going to pay for your test, presumably.

Thanks for responding! I guess it's too soon to plan for anything at this point. The 'guilty of covid until proven innocent' is frustrating when traveling, especially with documentation of previous infection and immunization. I pray the craziness ends soon. Sigh.

The problem is, Sherri, that even if you don't get it with symptoms because of your history you can still carry it and pass it on. They are trying everything to avoid that, especially as whatever you may be carrying may be a new variant.

Previous infection (Delta variant) and immunisation (as yet no hard data on protection from Omicron) is somewhat irrelevant to the Omicron variant.

Things will change numerous times before your trip.

Hi Sherri - you mention you are both military. One thing to remember is that clinics on US military bases in the UK will be space available only to non-active duty personnel. Also, logisitcally, you are looking at a fairly significant journey outside of central London (assuming that is where you are flying into) to get to a US facility. Unless you are planning on isolating on base in temporary lodging, it seems a bit pointless (to me, anyway).

A link you might check: https://tricare.mil/HealthWellness/HealthyLiving/Coronavirus/Coronavirus-Testing

While the rules will very likely change by the time your trip happens, to fill out your Passenger Locator form for entry into the UK, you'll need a code to add which indicates your Day 2 test is purchased and scheduled - which I dont believe is provided by the testing done at military clinics.
