travels from London to Scotland - stop in oxford

I am heading from the USA into London on the 9th of May , stay around for a week then heading into Edinburg on train for a week and then fly out of Edinburg on 23rd of May.

I want to do explore some of the English countryside in between, and will like to spend 2 - 3 nights in Oxford. Can anyone give me advice on where to stay in Oxford- I am a walker and love the history of Oxford including the Inspector Lewis series - I noticed the Airbnb are very expensive in Oxford and typically I hate hotels which appear cheaper however if they are in older buildings i can tolerate it.

so my questions are numerous -
Where to stay in Oxford
midway point on way to Edinburg on train - can go along the coast or middle/ countryside
ay other suggestions
I want to experience the english countryside

In Oxford we stayed at Henry's in July 2022. Great location, just off Cornmarket by the Carfax Tower. Small walk-up place, quiet side street, comfy room, windows that actually opened, even flagstone floors & quirky ceiling beams. Had a double with kettle & fridge, no breakfast but there's bakeries & cafes & pubs within a block. 125 a night. I'd stay there again.

I suggest that you take the train from Oxford to Windermere - which is in the Lake District. You will probably have to change twice - maybe at Birmingham New Street and Oxenholm (where the branch line to Windermere leaves the main line). You will of course, have to return to the main line to continue to Edinburgh.

It will be cheaper if you split the tickets and book specific trains in advance - say 10 weeks ahead. This site will tell you how to do it. https://www.traintickets.com/?/

When you leave Windermere (assuming that you did choose that option), you could take Stagecoach Bus 508 over the Kirkstone Pass to Penrith Station to catch the train to Edinburgh. This bus does not operate in winter. See:>
