I can't seen to find a bus line with a schedule for a trip from Oxford to Salisbury. Can anyone help?
This is what Rome2Rio.com is suggesting:
Oxford to Swindon via Stagecoach in Swindon
Swindon to Salisbury via Salisbury Reds
I haven't checked the companies' websites to see what the connection looks like. Rome2Rio (not known for accurate details) indicates that the train might be much faster. For that schedule you should check nationalrail.co.uk, I think.
http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/ gives between 1h40 and 2 hours by train. Example from tomorrow (buts lots of other trains):
Oxford depart 09:31, Reading arrive 09:54
Reading depart 10:02, Salisbury arrive 11:09
Do you have a reason to go by bus instead of by train?
Thank you so much. I was looking for the wrong website for National Rail.
Rome2Rio , why? I mean the website, not the journey......
There are very few direct trains from Reading to Salisbury. But on weekdays there are 2 trains most hours from Oxford to Basingstoke (via Reading, so same route) which take about 55 minutes. And 2 trains every hour from Basingstoke to Salisbury which take about 35 minutes. And needless to say the latter leave Basingstoke just as the former are arriving so you wait 30 minutes!
The bus option is possible once per hour but takes much longer, Oxford- Swindon is 85 minutes, Swindon -Salisbury nearly 2 hours. These are not long distance express coaches but ordinary double-deckers (and without proper luggage space). But they will be much cheaper than the train.
We took the train last fall and had to change, I think at Basingstoke. It was easy and fun and not expensive. With the train both ways we had a long day but saw a lot in Salisbury. A worthwhile trip.
As a consequence of the part closure of Waterloo for engineering the stopping services that would normally go there have been diverted to Reading at the moment, Unless this trip is taking place in the near future Basingstoke is the normal changing point.
You can go from Oxford to Salisbury by train - usually with 1 change en route in around 1 hour 40 minutes. Pay on the day return is around £33.
If you want a nice train ride from Oxford through the countryside, consider going to Hereford. A direct train leaves Oxford at 9.24am to arrive Hereford at 11.41. Coming back, a direct train leaves Hereford at 15.14 to arrive Oxford at 17.28. The pay on the day return ticket is £23.50. (Other trains exist but require a change en-route).
One stop east of Hereford is Ledbury - which has some really olde England buildings. You might like to consider taking an earlier train back from Hereford to Ledbury and having a look around. Unfortunately, Ledbury station is almost a mile from there town centre. (Hereford station is about a 13 minute walk from the centre).http://www.cotswolds.info/herefordshire/ledbury.shtml
It is also possible to visit Bath from Oxford by train. 1 change needed - at Didcot.
