Traveling to London in November- What coat to pack?

Hello

I'll be traveling to London this Thursday and I wanted to know if anyone who has traveled to London in November can suggest if a rain jacket would be suffice or If I would need something thicker? Weather looks like it's going to be mid 50's and wet.

Thanks

It really depends on your own tolerance.
For example, I work at a university in Chicago and see college kids wearing shorts and not much when it is mid 50's.
I was in London 6 years ago today and further north in Edinburgh days before that.
Coming from Chicago I think a water resistance light coat and layer underneath as needed.

Think layers and come prepared with something to wear under the rain jacket if it is cold, damp and raw. It's not necessarily the temperature you need to worry about, but the wind chill factor.

I agree, think layers. I have a medium weight jacket that covers a good range of temps, a Goretex rain shell I can put over it, that also stuffs into a pocket if rain is "iffy", and then I usually pack a fleece jacket to add if colder, or wear by itself if warmer, and if even colder is anticipated, thermal undershirts that are very lightweight. I can cover down below freezing with that combo.

I often travel to London in November.

All about layers. Most often wear a Lands End zip up fleece and Ex Officio waterproof rain coat.I also pack the fold away in its on carry bag puffer vest I got from Amazon Essentials. If bitter cold I’ll pack an long sleeve Patagonia Capilene to put on as my base layer.

FYI usually light drizzle early AM or late afternoon but mostly blue skies. I’m one of those carry on travelers so I’ve made certain what I take keeps me warm, dry and is light weight as well.

November is a great month to experience London.
Have a great time.

I'm currently in shorts and t-shirts particularly when I walk the dogs as it's often several hours up and down hills and I get a bit warm. There have been days recently (and forecast for next week) when heavy rain had caused me to don the waterproofs however I'm out in the hills so I'm clad head to toe in very good waterproofs, you won't need to be so protected if you're going to be in London as there are plenty of places to pop in and ride out the heaviest of the rain.

For me, in London in November I would be in jeans, leather ankle length boots/shoes, a polo shirt and a light jacket. This would be enoguh to protect me from light rain and a coolish temperatures. If the weather is forecast to be unusually cold then a thicker coat would suffice, my North Face puffer jacket in this case and a pair of merino gloves.

Look at the weather before you go over. Only you know what you’ll need. Each year is different. I’ve been there in November when a heavy coat was needed, while other times only a medium weight jacket was needed. It can get pretty chilly at night. Assume there’s a chance of rain every day no matter what the forecast says.

I usually take a spring raincoat that has a heavier lining. Also I bring a few turtlenecks and light sweaters as it can be damp and windy.
I've been in Chicago but London in November can be raw and damp. I'd pack some gloves along as well because it can get cold.

However, the nice thing about London is you can always pop-in for a cuppa somewhere or find a pub with a fireplace. And the Christmas lights will be on and the stores all decked out. I loved seeing all the holiday displays. And I might have eaten a few too many mince pies. My family went with me and no one wanted to try one with me because in our family it was always made with meat. However, after having a few non-meat mince tarts in London, we now bake them every year for the holidays.

I’m used to cold, wet, windy, unpredictable weather as I’m from Seattle. We will be in London in December.. I wanted a waterproof coat, with insulation that went mid-thigh as my legs tend to get the coldest (and layers doesn’t help that). I’ve been watching this coat that met all my requirements. If you’re an REI member with the REI coupon lowers the price more. https://www.rei.com/rei-garage/product/216199/lole-piper-insulated-jacket-womens

I froze in London in the summer and ended up buying a coat. Layers and waterproof plus a neck scarf really helped me too.

After above average temperatures for November (some days considerably above) the trend is down to some degrees below average by this weekend. On the other hand the latest forecast is somewhat drier. Rain jacket, jumper and shirt would be my preference to allow some mixing and matching.

Lissette, I see you have returned from London. What type coat did you end of wearing? Did you stay warm enough?

Hello

Yes actually for this time of year I was concerned that I was going to be cold but I was wrong. The days were beautiful- a bit cool but nothing like some good layers didn't help. I ended up bringing back two coats- a light rain jacket that came in handy the few times that It did rain and then one that was a bit heavier. Overall the weather was very agreeable and was perfect for walking. Luckily enough the days that it did rain a bit I just popped into a museum or shop and just kept dry until the rain stopped.

I plan on visiting London sometime in the early spring/summer so I have more daylight as there are a few things that I still need to see. All the better excuse to go back.

One thing I do is take a really light knapsack to put a rain shell with a hood in. It can be blustery sometimes. Otherwise, just a shirt and heavy sweater or sweatshirt. A scarf is handy too, though I don't bother with gloves or a toque. It can get quite hot in the tube.
