Traveling from London to St Andrews

My husband and I will be leaving London on a Monday morning in July and sleeping that night in St Andrews, Scotland so my husband can golf on Tuesday. How would you recommend that we travel? I’m looking at train and flight schedules. Thanks in advance for your advice.

On most trains to Leuchars you will have to change trains in Edinburgh. When you get to Leuchars there usually are cabs waiting there. St. Andrews is only five miles from the train station. Also, you should go to natinalraol.co.uk and book your train tickets 11 weeks in advance, you will save a lot of money.

Here are a couple of notes on the assumption that you'll want something to do while your husband is playing golf.

The British Golf Museum is great for anyone with an interest in British history from about 1800 to recent decades, with some interactive exhibits and other fun stuff. Their cafeteria is on the 2nd floor with big picture windows overlooking the Old Course's 1st/18th hole.

You can sign up for the walking tour of the Old Course, which consists of not a whole lot of walking -- more standing around listening to anecdotes about famous golfers and what they did in certain famous tournaments on certain holes. If you're lucky you'll get a photo op on the iconic Swilcan Bridge. The tour concludes at a gift shop where (if I remember correctly) your ticket stub entitles you to a special freebie or discount.

My husband is also going to try to golf at St. Andrews. We are there on July 8. If your husband was looking to do the sign up sheet morning of, I found a website that helps to pair people so they can try for the ballot instead. Look into Gingerbeergolftravel.com. Hope it helps.

Your husband should check in at the Old Pavilion give them his name. They will join him with a two or three player group. I would suggest to be at the Old Pavilion when they open. My husband did this and he had a great time.

How would you recommend that we travel?

Book a train to Leuchars today https://www.lner.co.uk/

Then it's an easy bus or taxi journey to St Andrews

If the times (and prices) of the direct train to Leuchars don't suit, book an Advance ticket to Edinburgh then buy a second ticket from Edinburgh to Leuchars.

The responses have addressed the golfing aspects, but not your actual question. Personally, I would recommend flying from London to Edinburgh. BA has a short flight that operates frequently throughout the day. From Edinburgh airport, take the tram to Haymarket Station. From there you can catch a train to Leuchars (in the direction of Dundee/Aberdeen). As mentioned, there are taxis/buses from Leuchars station to St. Andrews.

Obviously you can train from London to Edinburgh, with the trip taking from 4 1/2 to 5 1/2 hours. You're going to lose most a day traveling, so it's your preference.

... except it is the best part of an hour to most London airports from most parts of London, then 2 hours ahead, then 75-90 minutes flight, the half an hour leaving the airport especially if you have to collect luggage, and the half an hour into Haymarket. That's about 5 and a half hours - even cutting it short it would be 4 and a half - about the same time as the train which doesn't have luggage issues, takes you right to station you need to continue to St Andrews, has decent eating on board or you can collect whatever picnic you want in Kings Cross or St Pancras across the street and feast on board, and even comes with some scenery.

I agree ... it is your preference...

Personally, I'd rather avoid airports whenever possible. Train all the way would be much less of a hassle-no security checks. Assuming that the train from London continues to St. Andrews after Edinburgh, you can just sit down and relax until you reach St. Andrews.

Thank you all for your comments. I bought train tickets to Luechars, advance tickets so am pleased with the price. As for my husband golfing, I am looking into the website that was recommended and other than that, he will be in the early morning line. Thanks again!
