traveling from London Heathrow to edinburgh

1.) I am traveling from London Heathrow to Edinburgh. How much time do I need to out of customs and get from the airport to King Cross to catch the train to Edinburgh?
2.) I will be taking the train from Edinburgh back to Heathrow. My flight leaves at 1:40 pm. I have been told that I should be at the airport 3 to 4 hours before my flight because of congestion. If so should I arrive the night before in order to give myself sufficient time to get to the airport?
Any comments or feedback would be appreciated. This is my maiden voyage overseas by myself and I will be traveling alone. On top of that I will be flying standby.

Thanks for any advice.

The best advice would be to fly both ways but assuming you're set on the train I would leave 4 hours between plane and train. And if you're flying standby does that mean you're not pre booking train tickets? If so you might get a shock at walk up ticket prices.

Any reason you don't fly both ways? Walk up flights can't be that much more expensive than the walk up train.

Taking the train will be exhausting. Flying from SLC to London. Then taking the tube to Kings Cross. Then a five hour train ride to Edinburgh.

Seriously look into flights. Even if it means a long layover at Heathrow, it will be less stressful. You can shop, eat, drink and if your layover is truly long, get a room at the Yotel in Terminal 4. They rent by the hour.

As for the return, the same thing. Try to fly. If you do take the train, take if the night before. Plenty of hotels near the airport.
