traveling from Glasgow to London, lodging suggestions

We (couple, adult daughter) be on a guided tour of Scotland in June then want to spend 7 nights in London. The tour ends in Glasgow, I am hoping we can travel by train from Glasgow to London. We are looking at staying in the vicinity of the British Museum. Any suggestions, tips? Hotels vs apts (working with a budget of about $2K US for the stay)?

If you can commit to non-refundable, non-exchangeable train tickets (or tickets with significant restrictions on these actions), you will save a fortune by booking your trains online as soon as they are available for sale.

For more on British trains (including how to book them), look at The Man In Seat 61: http://www.seat61.com/UK-train-travel.htm#.VLCqsXsV6jA

For the direct trains from Glasgow to London (Euston) you will need Virgin Trains. www.virgintrains.co.uk

If you use the slower route via Settle, your journey will be Glasgow to Carlisle (Change); Carlisle to Leeds VIA SETTLE; Change in Leeds for an express to London (Kings Cross) see www.eastcoast.co.uk If doing such a journey, it is likely to be cheaper to buy 3 tickers - 1 for each leg of the journey.

Try www.nationalrail.co.uk to get some sea of the fares. Check about 10 weeks in advance of now to see if they are cheaper than now.

Just a quick note - I traveled London to Glasgow last August on Virgin Trains. I did get a substantial discount for buying ahead (you can have your tickets mailed to you). The trip was about five hours, and there is WiFi available on the train.

Thanks to all the train hints. It is still too early to make reservations but I am looking at the various sites so that I will be ready to go when we get closer to our departure date.
