travel from Heathrow (T2) to Leicester Square after 12 noon

We will be staying at the Heathrow Premier Inn (Bath Road) and can leave by noon on a Sunday. Our destination will be the Premier Inn at Leicester Square by about 3:00 pm. What are the best ways to travel, knowing 1) that we will want less expensive means and 2) we will have 2 large pieces of luggage for a month’s tour of England.

We prefer taking the Piccadilly Line (dark blue on the tube map) from the airport. Get on at T2 and get off at Leicester Square tube stop; no changes. It will take about an hour.

You can take the stairs if you like, but Leicester Square has escalators, and Heathrow has lifts and escalators. But if you are going to be travelling , you should seriously reconsider trying to haul around large pieces of luggage. You might want to look at some packing light articles and videos. Lots of people travel for many weeks with just a carry on and personal item. At least consider downsizing to a smaller suitcase to make travelling easier.

Leicester Square has stairs from the ticket hall to the street level. If you can’t manage luggage up about 20 to 30 steps, I’d suggest you book a car service.

If you want to avoid stairs altogether, the nearest station you can get to is Tottenham Court Road via the Elizabeth line. However, this leaves quite a walk afterwards which might not be too good with large luggage either.

Perhaps surprisingly we do have washing facilities here in the U.K. You can easily get your stuff laundered whilst you’re here, which means that you really do not need to haul around large suitcases.

Thanks to all who responded. It’s helpful to know that there are escalators/lifts at Heathrow and escalators at Leicester. Our having larger luggage is a personal effect of our travel plans—not a shortfall in packing/planning. And thanks to those of you who have advice about our possible use of use of laundry facilities. That was amusing!

if you want to bring large (and presumably heavy) luggage that is certainly your choice to decide as you want.

Just understand that actions have consequences, and that tradeoffs need to be made sometimes.

I understand that a priority for you is budget, but sometimes having unwieldy luggage may cause you to have to make expensive choices.

I don't know what you consider large, but if it is over 50 pounds you are likely to have to pay an extra fee on each air leg. If you can manage these big bags up a lot of stairs then going to the Leicester Square underground by Piccadilly line will be cheapest, depending on how many "we" is.

But understand that although Leicester Square underground station does have escalators (stay to the right as a clear lane should be left for people walking up or down the escalators on the underground - it isn't done to stand on the left or block walkers) they don't go all the way from train platform to street. Always expect stairs on the underground - there are only a few truly step free stations.

I don't understand the reference in your last sentence - "we will have 2 large pieces of luggage for a month’s tour of England and pray????" Is that 2 each or 2 between you? I personally take a lot less than we used to take, and we have found ways to do that easily and comfortably.

About pray - do you mean you are on a religious tour? Or that you'll take all the luggage and hope for divine intervention getting it moved? I'm not making light of that, just trying to understand.

we will have two large suitcases between the two of us (less than 50 lbs, for sure). I may have given a bit of wrong info in my original request. The first half of our month long vacation will be on a cruise of the British Isles and the other half will be in Norway where we are being hosted by family. the trip from Heathrow to Leicester is a one time trip to get us into the city for two days of touring and allowing for acclamating to the time change. So…the original question was really about making the move from one hotel (at Heathrow) to another at Leicester Square.

Problem with Piccadilly Line is not so much the luggage (Heathrow is the first station so lots of room). Problem is your hotel is still a way from Heathrow. You'd have to take a bus or taxi to get from your hotel to Heathrow.

Since you have to take a bus (or taxi) anyway, another option is just get on bus H98 in front of your hotel (or a taxi), take it to Hayes & Harlington, and take Elizabeth Line to Tottenham Court Road. Elizabeth Line trains are larger than tube trains and have more room for luggage. From Tottenham Court Road you cand transfer to Northern Line to your hotel (1 stop) or just walk (5 mins).

I am confused as to why you would want to switch hotels. Assuming you are flying into Heathrow, just go to the Leicester Square hotel by private transfer or taxi. Maybe I am missing something here?
