Travel from Dover to Normandy

We are going to be in England for the Goodwood Festival of Speed and the British GP. Before the festival of speed, we will be staying in Chichester. We have a car and would like to spend a day at Normandy then return to our B &B for the evening. Has anyone done this? Is it possible to do in a day? Once we take the ferry across the channel, how long of a drive is it to Normandy? Are there private tour operators I should contact? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The Dover ferries go to either Calais or Dunkerque.
The Dunkerque run seems to be generally cheaper and more frequent with longer hours (impression only, I always use this route and I think that's why), but the trip is a half hour longer. Dunkerque, additionally, is a half hour further east - - thus a double whammy.

From Calais to Caen is just under four hours, once you clear the ferry. You have to be at the ferry port a half hour prior to departure.

It'd be smart to make reservations.

Directferries.co.uk has the scoop.

It wouldn't be something I'd want to try.

I know zip about guided tours.

It is much quicker to take your car through the Channel Tunnel rather than use the ferry. Details are at www.eurotunnel.com. We have done day trips through the Tunnel several times, bu have generally been staying in Kent, just a few minutes drive from the terminal. We have done day trips to Ieper, Bruges and Ghent, but Normandy (if you mean the Caen area or the Normandy landing beaches rather than Rouen) would be quite a bit further. Also, if you were starting from Goodwood, that would add a considerable amount to your journey not only in distance but in the time you would need to allow.

One other consideration is that France is one hour ahead of the U.K., although what you lose on the way over you recover on the journey back. This is something to consider when planning your day, especially if you want a meal back in England. We have generally had our evening meal in France.
