Travel from Bath to Heathrow

We will be returning from our time in the Lakes District by driving from Ambleside to Bath, returning the car rental, then bus or train from Bath to Heathrow where we will stay the night before departure the following morning. What is the best transportation from Bath to Heathrow? Should we secure the tickets ahead of time or wait until the day of travel? Since our driving time is long that day I am hesitant to secure a specific time for departure in Bath. Thanks my friends!

By the time you total up bus / train fares (especially if there are more than two of you), the hassle factor, and the time involved, you might want to consider a private car service. We used one based in Bath to go to the Bristol airport but we would not hesitate to use them from Bath to Heathrow. The web site is chauffertravel.co.uk and the email address is [email protected]. We sent an email detailing our needs and had a reply within 24 hours. Not sure about the price since we didn't actually take that trip, but to us it's a small luxury we feel is well worth the price.

Why not drive all the way to Heathrow and return the rental car there? Most agencies allow this with no significant fee, though there may be a small fee specifically for the airport location.

I assumed driving all the way to Heathrow would be a difficult, traffic-filled journey. How congested is the drive from Bath to Heathrow?

Hang on - are you planning to drive from Ambleside to Bath - see Bath and then head for Heathrow all in the same day? That’s a pretty tall order. Whether you are going to Bath or Heathrow direct from Ambleside, the most likely place to get stuck in slow moving traffic is the Birmingham area.

No, we will have already toured Bath at the beginning of our trip. We were just going to return there to return the rental car. I read that driving in or near London is difficult so thought that returning the car in Bath and using public transportation to our hotel near Heathrow would be wisest.

the coach will be in the same traffic. Our trip from Bath to the airport was much longer than scheduled because of that.
