travel between Winchester and Wells with stop in Salisbury

We booked hotels in Winchester and Wells in order to see the cathedrals and thought we could make an easy side trip to Salisbury. However discovered that bus/train combinations between the the three sites are not easy. Are there any tour companies out of either city that could get us to Salisbury and possibly other interesting sites? We did a Mad Max tour out of Bath to Stonehenge, Avebury and other sites and it was fabulous. Anything similar out of either Winchester or Wells?

Winchester has a station on the main line from London Waterloo to Southampton, lots of trains.
Wells does not have a train connection. The only option is infrequent buses, rental car or a bus tour. I don't know of any bus tours, I would recommend a hire car, as this gives you the option of visiting surrounding places, for example Glastonbury.

Winchester to Salisbury doesn't look too terrible by train; one hour each way, with one connection, departing every half hour. The tourist office does not look very encouraging for tours other than to Stonehenge. Mad Max has another itinerary, but out of Bath again.

A company called First operate a direct bus (173) between Bath & Wells. (It is a bit slow going for the distance).www.firstgroup.com/ukbus/new_service_updates/attach_1373639874_18191_BATH%20173.pdf

To get from Winchester to Salisbury, you can either go by train - which involves going into Southampton and changing OR - take a bus from Winchester to Romsey (see the Abbey) & then take a train to Salisbury. You will find details of the buses here:>

Salisbury to Bath is no problem by train. See www.nationalrail.co.uk (also for ROM > SAL).
