We are cruising out of Southhampton in September, a couple days in Southhampton before the cruise and then our flight is the day after return from the cruise. Looking for advice on how to get to Heathrow and maybe see some sights on the way. We have been to London several times, so not trying to squeeze that in, just some sights and transportation suggestions to Heathrow? Also, any recommendations on a hotel at or near Heathrow?
What terminal are you flying out of at Heathrow? I can suggest hotels when I know this.
The easiest way, via public transportation, to get from Southampton to Heathrow is either a National Express or Flixbus coach. It's direct with no changes and takes under 2 hours.
You could also get a train but that would entail multiple changes and take longer.
The other option is a private car service that will drive you to Heathrow. If you do a search of the forum you will see this question has been asked in the past. You might get some ideas looking at them.
Thank you for your reply. I will probably seek a private car for both ends of the trip Heathrow to Southampton and back due to our age and my wife bringing a lot of luggage. Hopefully, we can see some sights on the way back to Heathrow. Not sure of the terminal, but we are flying American Airlines back to Boston for a side trip after the cruise.
Unless you were trying to go all the way to Heathrow by train the usual route by rail would be train to Woking, Reading or Basingstoke then the rail air bus from any of those to Heathrow, so one change.
From Basingstoke the bus only serves Terminal 5, from the others all terminals.
AA to Boston leaves from Terminal 3 at Heathrow.
If you plan to hire the car and driver for the day, you could spend some time in Winchester. Or perhaps the longer route to Heathrow and stop in Portsmouth.
At Heathrow, for Terminal 3, I normally suggest the Hilton Garden Inn at Terminal 2/3. It's actually connected to Terminal 2 which is a less than 10 minute walk, underground, to Terminal 3. This includes moving sidewalks. Luggage carts are available near the terminal.
If that is too much, then one of the hotels along Bath Road. The hotel can call a taxi for you to get to Heathrow. There is a bus service but if you have a lot of luggage it may be easier to call a taxi.
