I took a taxi. It was pretty cheap on a fixed rate. I can’t remember the exact amount but it was around 10 pounds.
The day I disembarked I was off the ship pretty quickly and early. I ended up outside the bus station in less than 5-10 minutes. The building (next to the bus slips) wasn’t “officially “ open yet, but the extremely kind workers there saw the need and opened up the building with its waiting area and restrooms to the cruise passengers who were arriving from the ship.

The buses came on time, loaded efficiently and it was a good trip. The bus to Victoria station left more often than the bus to Heathrow.

I’m headed back for a cruise in May and plan to take this transport option again.

There are 5 cruise terminals-widely scattered.

You need to know which you are leaving from-
38 or 38/9 berth = QEII Cruise Terminal; 46 berth = Ocean Cruise Terminal; 101 berth = City Cruise Terminal; 106 berth = Mayflower Cruise Terminal; 102 berth = Horizon Cruise Terminal

Berth 38/39 is realistically taxi only (in spite of it's name other lines apart from Cunard do use it); 46 has a good bus service (Buses 19 and U1 to Town Quay), and 101, 102, and 106 are all in a line.

You CAN walk in through Dock Gate 4 to 38/39, and there is a marked walkway, but it is a VERY long walk.

101, 102 and 106 are NOT served by any bus line. You either walk (it really is that close) or taxi to Central Station. It is actually farther to walk to West Quay where route 12 starts than to walk to Central Station.

You should have been told by your cruise line which terminal you are leaving from.

It is also not unheard of to leave from one terminal and arrive back at another

You are scheduled to be leaving from Berth 46 at Southampton and arriving back at Berth 106

Just take a taxi. I was near in a hotel near one of the Cunard berths and as it looked so close, I decided to walk it. Rubble, challenges crossing a busy through road. It wasn't fun. Even though not far, I definitely took a taxi to the train station on my return.
