Just take the Piccadilly line tube all the way, 36-37 minutes. Just follow the signs for the Underground.

Adults (16 and over) fare £5.60, children 10 and under free, 11-15 year olds half price with the Young Visitor Discount added to an Oyster card. Adults just need a contactless card or phone or watch pay.

If getting on the underground/tube at terminal 5 the ride is closer to 45 minutes. Since you’d be getting on the tube at the end of the line, there are plenty of seats.

Taking the Underground (tube) will be the most direct. You asked for step by step directions.

1. Exit from the arrivals area at the airport into the terminal.
2. There will be clear signage to follow to the Underground.
3. Ticketing- ticket machines will be available next to underground and usually have a worker nearby to assist. You can also “tap in, tap out” with contactless credit cards.
4. Board the underground.

5. Ride it to your station.

There are any number of you tube videos on riding the underground from the airport to Central London.. you may find it helpful to watch a few of these.

Gloucester Road is not a step free station.

Have you considered a taxi for such a large group with luggage? Then get used to the tube when unencumbered.

Yes...taxi or uber sounds much less involved....any idea cost for 6 people and luggage?

The tube is really very straightforward and quite possibly easier than Uber, as you have to find the specific pick up point at the terminal. Unless you have some specific mobility issues or very young children I would opt for tube every time.

While not the least expensive option, for ease of travel we ordered tickets in advance for the Heathrow Express to Paddington Station and then took a taxi from the official line at Paddington to our hotel right across from Gloucester Rd station. Children are free with an adult on the Heathrow Express and the Fixed Day single standard ticket is good for any time the date that you indicate. As you exit passport control at the airport go to the right. Take the Trains ramp down and follow signs for the Heathrow Express. It leaves every 15 minutes and is an easy short ride with space for luggage. To get a taxi at Paddington Station go to the left of the Paddington Station entrance by #12 Taxis sign. Follow that to the taxi queue. It was fun to take a black cab and only a short ride. That way we also avoided the stairs at the Gloucester Rd tube station with luggage.

What many suggest is a pre-booked car service. They meet you as you come out of customs, walk you to the car, and drop you off in front of your accomodations.

When you book the service, you will know the price. (They'll give you a quote prior to your booking.)

They will be cheaper than a taxi.

Two popular services are Blackberry Cars and Just Airports

I can’t see how taking a very expensive train to the wrong place in the city and then needing a cab to where you want to be is easier than just taking a tube train straight to your destination. Yes, the HEX is a bit more comfortable but why bring an unnecessary change in? The HEX advance fares are now £15 and if sold out £25, plus taxi fare.

IMO there are 2 options you should decide between for transportation from Heathrow to Gloucester Road.

1) take the Piccadilly Line tube (no changes) from Heathrow.
2) book the car service - as per the options highlighted by Frank upthread.

NOT uber or taxi.

As there are 6 of you, and you are not experienced travellers, I would opt for the car service. Its easy, at the exit there are lots of drivers holding up signs. The car services really do get good feedback.

If you go to the websites highlighted by Frank, you will be able to get an idea of cost.
