We are planning independent travel in London following a Princess cruise. It seems that taking the National Express bus to London Victoria station is the best option. What is the best way to get from Southampton Ocean Terminal #46 to the National Express bus station? Is walking a good option?
Where are you going to in London?
The train may be a better option, certainly a more regular service.
before you try to walk with cruise luggage from the docks to the centre of the town I'd "walk" it on streetview and see if it really looks inviting to you. I wouldn't do it. Taxi sounds like a much better idea. And check the train from Southampton Central to London. You might prefer it, depending on where your London headquarters will be.
Southampton docks is a very busy area with lots of trucks.
Princess offers transportation from the ship to Victoria Coach Station, just used it two weeks ago
I appreciate all the responses and assistance. We are staying in a hotel near the Victoria Coach Station. I understand that using the train from Southampton dock will require transferring. We'd prefer to use another method of transportation.
If using the National Express bus, should we purchase tickets in advance ... or are we safe to purchase tickets at the bus station when we leave the ship?
Thanks so much for any and all guidance.
Thank you for the information. We purchased Princess transfers from Heathrow Airport to the dock, but did not purchase transportation back to Heathrow because we were doing independent adventures in London after the cruise.
Regarding National Express bus tickets, we had planned to purchase the tickets at the dock following our cruise. Should we purchase the tickets in advance? How quickly does the bus fill to capacity? Any suggestions?
I did not know that Princess offered transportation to Victoria Station. Our hotel is close to the National Express bus stop at Victoria Coach Station, so we had planned to take National Express on our own.
Please tell me more about the Princess transportation to Victoria Station. How often is it offered? Is it by car, van, bus? Is it easy to use? What's the cost?
Thanks so much for any and all information and guidance!
The transfers are via coach bus and can be purchased using the same process used to purchase your Heathrow to ship transfer. Our travel agent handled, however I’m sure you can call Princess as well. I forget the cost; the process was super easy. On disembarkation day, all those with transfers to Victoria gather in one location and leave ship together. Board coach and are dropped off at Victoria Coach Station.
We've done this twice on the bus and purchased the tickets ahead of time online. Since buses are limited in number and size, you might have to wait for a later one if you don't prepurchase.
We found that anytime after 9:30 was very easy to do. Just pick up a taxi from the port to the bus terminal. I wouldn't walk unless you have small luggage and are younger. We sat next to a poor woman who walked and face-planted during her walk.
The bus trip was very comfortable and then we caught a taxi from Victoria Station. We used the tube for the rest of the time.
Thanks to each of you for your helpful responses. We will check into the transfer that Princess offers to Victoria Coach Station.
Have a wonderful day!
