Transportation: Bath-Salisbury-Stonehenge-Bath

We are heading to England at the end of April and part of our itinerary includes the after hours tour of Stonehenge at 8pm.
We were going to take the train to Salisbury and see the Cathedral, wander the town and have dinner. Then, how to get to Stonehenge? We were interested in the bus which runs from the train station but it looks like it only runs during regular Stonehenge hours and not during the early morning and late night tour. So a taxi? If so, should we arrange it ahead of time or would there be a taxi queue near the train station?

On our return, we might arrange for a driver to take us back from Stonehenge to Bath. Any recommendations for this service?

Thank you!

Im sorry I have no help with your question, because Im looking for the same transportation. However, we will be going to Stonehenge during the day.

Can you share more about...

"We were interested in the bus which runs from the train station but it looks like it only runs during regular Stonehenge hours and not during the early morning and late night tour".

If I find out anything regarding your question, I will be sure to respond here.

E23.20 is the full train fare. If you know the time you are travelling there are advance fares from as low as £5 each way.

Thank you so much for your replies, it is good to know about the discount price of the train with an advanced purchase.
I am trying to get a feel for how available taxis would be from Salisbury to get to Stonehenge to start the tour.

We are in the process of arranging a private driver from Stonehenge to Bath.

The appeal of visiting at 8pm is that is is an inner circle tour. The regular tour hours are 9:30am-7:00pm and are you only allowed to view it from a distance, on the exterior perimeter. The 8pm tour allows you inside access and the ability to see the sunset at 8:30 pm. There is also an early morning inner circle tour, that you can view sunrise, for those who might be interested.

This question comes up fairly often and I think the only sensible option to arrange your transport there and back in advance. You will definitely need to have your return journey booked as no taxis will be available at Stonehenge. It will probably be quite expensive.

If you go at night then the museum and recreated dwellings won’t be open so although you get to go closer to the stones you miss out on some other stuff.

Thank you! We are planning to leave Bath after lunch and take the train to Salisbury to enjoy the town and the Cathedral. We will have dinner there and then head up to Stonehenge. I think when we get off the train in Salisbury, we will try to find a taxi driver who would be available after dinner to transport us there.

A private driver from Stonehenge to Bath seems like it will be about $80, but then we won't have to pay for another taxi and more train tickets back to Bath. And at night it seems like a good investment to not have to figure out all of these transfers in the dark.

What Helen said:

In my opinion, you're missing out on some of the best parts.
If I were going to Stonehenge at 8 PM, I would be staying in Salisbury that night, not Bath.
