Transport to Heathrow terminal 2 from Tower hill neighborhood

We are flying out of Heathrow, terminal 2 on Tuesday Aug 1. We plan to arrive 4 hours early. On google maps it suggests the Circle line tube, then Heathrow express. Thoughts? We will be in London from Sun afternoon on, hopefully time to get familiar with tube, train bus etc...can't afford to get mixed up and be late to Heathrow.
Does anyone have a car service they recommend, or taxi as another option?

The cheapest and most reliable route from Tower Hill is to take @ Circle or District line tube west to either Baron’s Court or Hammersmith and change to a Piccadilly line train to Heathrow. The change is literally 10 feet across the platform so very very easy. That will cost £5.60pp and take just over an hour.
The route you have found may just be slightly quicker but it will be a more complicated change and will cost a standard zone 1 tube fare + £25 fr the Heathrow Express.
A car service will almost certainly take longer and is likely to cost around £100 from that side of town.
There’s a 4th choice - take the tube to Liverpool St and then pick up the Elizabeth line to Heathrow. Again a bit quicker and the Lizzie line trains are a bit more comfortable but a longer change and £13+pp.
The first route I gave is the easiest.
Edit: Claudia’s route via Whitechapel is an alternative to mine via Liverpool St, but still quite a lengthy line change.

Since they did not ask for the “cheapest” option, why not a taxi to Whitechapel Station,,and Elizabeth Line from there?

The taxi to white chapel plan then Elizabeth Line looks like the smoothest choice to me …

Tower Hill is the closest station for the District line/Picc Line route, walkable and an easy to manage station. Liverpool Street would be the closer station than Whitechapel for the Elizabeth line.
If going to Whitechapel then the taxi passes Aldgate East- the alternative station for the District/Picc route.
The Google maps route is the least likely route. By the time you've switched trains not significantly faster.
But all four of these routes are good routes. As so often in London there are multiple routes, and it's a personal choice in the end with no definitive answer.
Travel time wise overall there is probably only around 10 minutes in it, between all four routes. All take around the hour.
Check TfL on the day. If the Elizabeth line is having problems and the Picc/district not be willing to switch routes. The same the other way round.

I would always take the District line then Piccadilly for this - change at Baron's Court for an easy ten foot walk change.

It's quicker than any car and whilst the Elizabeth line or Heathrow Express might cut off some time (although might not be that much with its lower frequency) that is at greater expense and also a longer transfer.

The Piccadilly line has many detractors but it generally depends on which method you use to assess "reliability" - does it matter if trains are a minute late if the way you travel is by taking the first one that turns up, and that is in a couple of minutes? Every single train could be late but many travellers wouldn't actually notice. I have used it for many years and never found it particularly worse than others - and certainly better than many Circle line experiences.

If you are aiming for four hours before your flight you can risk using any method of travel to the airport as that is an hour over the recommended arrival for a long-haul flight

Kristin Y,

And added potential benefit of the Elizabeth line is AC. If it’s a hot day I’d go the taxi plus Lizzie method vs the Piccadilly line.

Ty! Not so hot here thank goodness.
We are taking the train from Bath up to York this morning. 🙂

Hope all goes well for Kristin Y on today's Bath to York journey.

Looking back to the earlier thread on the routing being taken there is no current disruption showing on either Great Western or LNER, and no engineering work on that section of the tube needed for a Paddington to KC transfer.

So fingers crossed for a good journey.

But a very rainy day forecast in York.

A useful government source for planning your movements is Transport for London:

Google Maps covers some of the material while TFL indicates ticket prices.

Thanks for the advice on tube and train in England! We got familiar with the Tower Hill tube station and really felt pretty confident, moving around the city using tube and train!
There were also helpful workers at the check-in areas. If you had a quick question, and using the contactless card, both in an out of the station was a great, easy way to do it, especially with just two days in London. We didn’t wanna bother with the oyster card…

For the journey to Heathrow, it worked out well Towerhill tube district line to Hammersmith then just turned around and there was the Piccadilly line, taking us right to Heathrow terminal two! Felt very powerful and successful navigating around like this, thanks for all the helpful tips!

so glad it went so very well for you... don't you agree that actually having a little practice is worth a million words? Love that Hammersmith connection....

Yes, the fact we had used the tube a little Monday was good practice for the trip Tuesday ..
