I am travelling from Toronto to Mumbai on 11th sept and have a layover of 8 hrs in London. I have an Indian passport and a Canadian student visa valid till 14th sept 2018. do I need a transit visa for London?

Eight hours is not a lot of time. It took us about 1.5 hours to get off the airplane and through immigration. It normally takes at least another hour by tube to get to the core of London from Heathrow. Then another 1+ hour to get back which you need to be 3 hours before flight. Not sure a transit visa helps with the lines.

I think the OP is asking if he needs a transit visa to enter the UK to connect on the flight to Mumbai. I'd suggest contacting a UK embassy or consulate.
