I am arriving Heathrow Terminal 5 and need to get to London City Airport. What are the options? I have a long layove so it’s not time sensitive. Thank you.
Take the Elizabeth line to Stratford or Canary Wharf and then DLR to City airport. Should take about 75 minutes.
Is your second flight on the same day? If not, you could stay in central London overnight.
Finally, what date? If it’s a weekend there could be engineering works which might affect the trip. For example this weekend there are works on the Elizabeth line.
If the Elizabeth Line wasn't working for any reason take the Piccadilly Lie to Baron's Court or Hammersmith, cross platform change to the District Line for Monument Station. Change there to Bank for the DLR to LCY.
That is the pre Elizabeth Line route and is only 10 to 15 minutes slower. Bank and Monument are linked underground. The station complex has been totally rebuilt within the last year, and transfers between lines are now far easier and more intuitive than in the past.
Monument Station is named after the nearby monument to the Great Fire of London of 2 to 6 September 1666.
If you have time it is worth popping out of the station during your train change to see the Monument.
Bank/Monument station also houses the Central Line station (another valid pre Elizabeth line route from Heathrow via Ealing Broadway) and the Waterloo and City Line (popularly known as The Drain), from Waterloo Station. It is an important hub station.
Another pre Elizabeth line routing is Piccadilly to Green Park, Jubilee to Canning Town and then DLR. The Elizabeth line isn't much quicker because each of the connection places to the DLR is a few minutes walk.
