Train travel questions again!

I will be visiting in August. Our hotel in London is near the Kings Cross and Euston train stations. We will depart for East Dean/Eastbourne for 2 days during the time of the Air show (unplanned but happy to see some stunts!). I googled the trip from the train stations to the area and the route has us (4) going from the Euston station to the Victoria station, then to Eastbourne where we will take a bus to East Dean.
Now for my question, it is 124 pounds with the route I googled for the 4 of us; however if we had another option such as a bus, subway or taxi to the Victoria station from our hotel the cost drops dramatically to 28 pounds for the 4 us. Please advice. Your guidance has been very appreciated. Thanks

a bus, subway or taxi to the Victoria

Bus, Underground and taxi are all available for a fraction of the £96 difference you are seeing. How are you seeing £124 from Euston and £28 from Victoria?

Somebody who knows the trains better than me will be along soon but I can say it will definitely not be £28 for 4 people so you’ve got mixed up somewhere.

I think you’re probably seeing a fare of £28 each from Victoria and very slightly more from Euston to allow for the additional tube journey.

I suppose you balance the convenience of taking a Thameslink train direct from St Pancras International to Brighton for £23.80 (before railcard discounts) each vs going to Victoria then the ultra cheap fares from Victoria, assuming their availability.
If staying at Euston you take the nice back street walk via Somers Town which brings you in the back door of St Pancras next to the Thameslink station entrance. It takes ten minutes. I've done that walk 3 times today- to and from Euston for a very good breakfast in the Avanti lounge, then again between an 1159 arrival at Kings Cross main line and a 1216 departure from Euston.
Lots of people do that walk between the two stations.

It looks like the cheapest advance tickets aren't on sale for mid-August yet. For example, on August 7, there's tickets for Victoria-Eastbourne for £7 per person.

Central London is so well connected by tube that you can book from basically any London terminus and get there easily. From King's Cross/Euston to Victoria, you would take the Victoria southbound with no changes.

Yes, 4 people Victoria to Eastbourne for £28 is correct, before railcard discounts if there is availability. I use Northern rail personally, but that's detail.
