Train travel October 17th from Southampton Central to Edinburgh Waverley

I wonder if someone could check my planning work. My wife and I (67 and 66 years old) will be needing to travel from Southampton to Edinburgh Scotland on Sat. Oct 17. I see that National Rail as of today (July 22) only has schedules going to Oct 13. Is that correct? And I am going through info on Man in Seat 61 website as well.

Any ideas on the best way to get from Southampton to Edinburgh on Sat Oct 17? For airline, Skyscanner lists Logan Air-two adults for $280 US. Can I get a better price on train?
Since I could not check trains for Sat Oct 17 yet, I did Sat Oct 10 just for comparison. Two adults without railpass comes up to 232 pounds or $310 US... That's most of the day, with 3 changes, but we don't mind. We plan to purchase two senior rail cards as well, but the rail cards are not figured in my estimates here. I also read where Saturday could be a maintenance day for England trains-but we are locked into Sat Oct 17 for the travel day.

Am I too early to get this train/transportation figured out-should I wait a couple more weeks before booking?

Is this a good way to figure transportation in England? We have traveled throughout Germany and Austria in the past, seems quite a different process for England.

Yes, you can't buy train tickets for 17 Oct yet.

What you're also likely seeing is a standard ticket all the way from Southampton to Edinburgh. Search for separate Advance tickets Southampton to London, then London to Edinburgh, and that should be cheaper (when they become available in a few weeks).

EasyJet flies from Southampton to Glasgow - check their fares - I can find one for £48 on 17 Oct. Then all you need is a coach from Glasgow Airport to Glasgow city centre, then to Edinburgh - dead easy. Cheaper, quicker and less hassle than the train via London.

You are too soon, however I can see that there is announced engineering work, not affecting your journey.
The Southampton to Salisbury line has engineering work with replacement buses, also the Bristol to Birmingham route has engineering work with replacement buses south of Worcestershire Parkway. But the Southampton to Birmingham via Reading route (your route) looks to be open
The East Coast is open, having had its annual closures North of Newcastle most weekends in September, with diversions via Carlisle and buses.
However Leeds to York is closed so Cross Country are diverting via Doncaster omitting Leeds.
No word currently on the West Coast north of Birmingham.

The usual advice would be to change to Avanti West Coast at Birmingham if the route turns out to be open.

There should be a 1 change route every hour- generally a change at Birmingham New Street, either via East or West Coast. West Coast is normally faster.

The best price is likely to be via London, with a tube journey between Waterloo and Kings Cross. That would be ticketed (when times are released) as Southampton to London Underground Zone 1, and London Kings Cross to Edinburgh.

I would just fly.

Yes you can probably buy some combination of tickets and passes with our myriadic rail system that comes out cheaper. But it will take you all day.

The 1015 flight lands at midday, and with no immigration control and the efficient tram service you'll be having lunch in the city centre by 1300

there is a problem with the journey, It's Cross Country Trains! Their fleet is not fit for purpose on a journey of this length in standard class - they let me travel for free and I still won't do it! They are also relatively expensive and are holding back on release of the "discounted" Advance tickets - the ones I can see are only about £10 cheaper than what you found and those had some flexibility

I don't know what National Rail are doing cutting off enquiries early because they have another page saying reservations are open much longer https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/travel-information/advance-booking-dates/

If you can manage to change trains in London you can get tickets much cheaper and the ride itself is more comfortable.

Or ask the system for a route via Preston, which will be Cross Country to Birmingham and a more comfortable Avanti to Edinburgh, but that option is only available every two hours.

Enquiries are NOT being cut off early- to be able to offer a through Advance ticket all operators need to have bookings open. So while Cross Country are open longer, neither LNER or Avanti are yet open for that weekend, so you can't yet book from Kings Cross to Edinburgh on either LNER or Lumo, for instance, and can't book a through Cross Country ticket involving other train companies.

Even trying to split fares for previous weekends is not producing anything very useful even just as far as Birmingham, unless on a very early train. I spent a good deal of time on this last night, and nothing is really working.

On 3 October the 0615 and 0715 from Southampton have £19.90 Advance Fares to Birmingham. They arrive at 0851 and 0951.
The 1008 Avanti direct train to Edinburgh on 3 October is £42.40- a split fare on Crewe. So a total of £62.30.

Or the 0715 is £30.70 to Manchester Piccadilly on 3 October, arrive 1129, through train, then the 1224 direct TPE to Edinburgh is £50.90.

I'm on Cross Country today, and was on Tuesday, on the Birmingham to East Anglia service. Different trains and route I know. But perfectly pleasant and uncrowded journeys. I booked 6 weeks ago and got it for under £25 with a railcard each way - from March to West Cumbria. It helps that it is a weekday of course.

On the Cross Country website the £19.90 fare to Birmingham is available on 17 October on the 0515 and 0615 trains, but sold out on the 0715 and all later trains- £94.70 on those later trains.

Thanks to everyone for all the replies, this is all very helpful. I think what we will do on Sat Oct 17 is to leave Southampton on bus or train, go to London, and then from London to Edinburgh. In London I see we would get into Waterloo Station, probably take the tube to Kings Cross Station and catch the train to Edinburgh. I got an email from Trainline saying schedules are out for Oct 17, so that is where I got this route. With senior rail card the discount is pretty good. Havent checked the advanced tickets yet. Does this route I listed here seem workable?

Firstly booking through Trainline will incur booking charges, which won't be the case if you book through one of the train operating companies - doesn't matter which one. And. should anything go wrong, it will be easier to get recompense.

Secondly you say "we". If it's two of you, or any even number, it will be cheaper to get one TwoTogether card rather than two Senior Railcards, unless you are planning separate journeys later in your trip. Both cards cost £35 and give 1/3rd off fares but you only need one TwoTogether Card rather than two Senior Railcards.

Thanks Johnew52. I plan to book and purchase through National Rail and not Trainline, I signed up for the notification with trainline to get an idea when booking would be available. Yes, Its two seniors, wife and I. I will check out the TwoTogether card. I seen that mentioned on the Man in Seat 61 website too.

via London would certainly be a reliably cheap route..

Trainline are right that the schedules are out for the Cross Country trains service, and more digging shows that on their website they have Advance fares from Birmingham to Edinburgh for £42.60- so on Cross Country on the 0615 from SOU the journey can be done for about £62 (or around £41.60 with a railcard), but it is a long roundabout route.

But they are not out for the East Coast main line.

Via London on 3 October (the last Saturday currently on sale by SWR) it is £11.75 Southampton to Kings Cross (including the tube from Waterloo, with railcard), arrive Waterloo 1020, leave KC 1130 £55.30 with railcard- so £67.15 in total

NOTE- You would buy ONE Two Together Railcard for £35, not 2x Senior Railcards at £35 each- https://www.twotogether-railcard.co.uk/

isn31c: National Rail journey planner IS cutting off early for all enquiries, any route/operator, at this moment October 14th is the last you can ask for, presumably tomorrow it will click another day since when the OP raised the problem is was stuck at October13th. That is despite National Rail booking horizons page showing reservations open on several operators well beyond that date and operators own websites selling tickets, even Advance, beyond that date.

Tickets on Cross Country and GWR for 17 October were released to National Rail at midnight. I stayed up until midnight, then the forum froze.
Note that LNER tickets for that date have still not yet been released, pending verification of any engineering work. Avanti tickets (for the faster trains from Birmingham to Edinburgh are also still on hold).

Averting to your original idea from February to route through the Cotswolds with a break at Moreton in the Marsh that is still possible-

Southampton to Oxford at 0715- £7.05 Advance Ticket with a railcard, change and arrive M-I-M at 0918

Off Peak Day Single Oxford to Worcestershire Parkway £16.15 (allows break of journey at M-i-M)

Advance Ticket Worcestershire Parkway to Edinburgh £30.50 on any hourly direct afternoon train. Remember the trains are starting at Worcestershire Parkway so will not be arriving there busy. Being an Advance Ticket you need to choose which train you want.

So a total of £53.70 each.

LNER have now released tickets for 17 October, although South Western Trains [SWT] (Southampton to Waterloo haven't).

Looking at the Cotswolds again Avanti have also released tickets. They are about 30 minutes faster than Cross Country from Worcestershire Parkway but twice the price (at £11.10 +£55.50= £66.60).

SWT will release probably next week.

Thanks all for the replies, and I see National Rail has tickets available up to Oct 21. We have our last train trip planned for Oct 25. So I'll wait until the 25 is online before I start to purchase rail cards and advanced tickets. Hopefully a couple more days to a week.

My dates have opened up and now starting to book train trips for October. Just to double check, I can plan the journey on National Rail's website, and it looks like National Rail automatically connects me to the train company operating that particular journey, and then I purchase tickets?

Also I will be purchasing a two together rail card for me (66 yrs) and my wife (68 yrs). According to Man in Seat 61 website, we could purchase the train tickets now, apply the two together rail card without having purchased the rail card and then when we get to London just purchase the rail card before the train trips. Does it matter? Any preference?

On one of our trips the train is operated by Lumo. They have a luggage policy permitting one small bag-no dimensions given and a second bag 63x41x27 cm. Their site mentions a 40 pound charge for any larger luggage. Does Lumo really enforce the luggage size? However, I see other train operators like LNER allowing larger bags with similar times. So I will look into other operators.

This all seems like you really have to do your homework to get a good deal!

Yes, Lumo do have a baggage policy, at least at Edinburgh I am sure I have seen sizer baskets in use. With the personal item it essentially has to fit under the seat or on the overhead rack.
Lumo expect to be running full trains, so there is only so much room to stow luggage. There are not as many racks as on LNER because they want as many seats filled as possible (not seat space taken up with luggage), nor are people who expect to use a second seat for their luggage tolerated as they often are on other operators. And blocking aisles with luggage is something they wish to avoid.
So yes if the customer ambassadors see luggage clearly out of size they will charge you. It is worth saying that the conditions of carriage on any other operator allow an extra undiscounted fare to be charged under similar circumstances- it is just very rarely applied unless someone is being very egregiously offensive about it- say s train is full and someone refuses to move luggage off a seat then an extra fare can be charged. (or someone puts a case in front of them, not under the seat or on the racks (thus effectively blocking the other seat).
It doesn't much matter which way round you do the railcard (currently), so long as you have it when you go through the fare gates for your first train. There are moves afoot to make you enter the railcard number at time of purchase, but that has not yet started.

I never ever plan my journeys on National Rail- I do that on other Train Company websites then book direct with whichever train company- so I might plan a South Western Railway connecting to LNER journey on Northern and buy from Northern for instance. It makes no odds.

I would consider taking the 9.15 departure from SOU on the Cross Country Train as far as Birmingham New Street - change there for a Avanti West Coast Train to Edinburgh (you have 16 minutes to change trains). Arrive EDB 16.18 Cost £49.85 each with Railcard. 7 hours 3 minutes.

Another alternative is Dep SOU at 10.00 on South West Trains to London Waterloo - underground to Kings Cross for LUMO train to EDB arriving at 16.32. £40.60 each 6 hours 32 minutes.

So, option 1 avoids the hassle of having to cross London on the underground.

Suggest you check fares and schedules on >https://www.scotrail.co.uk which is a proper British train company website who do not charge commission and also work out split fare (one split only). (Yes, I know that you are not travelling on Scotrail - but they can still sell the tickets).

If you do take the via London route, bear in mind that Avanti West Coast operate trains from London Euston Station to Edinburgh. Takes a little longer using the west coast route, but it is another option.
Fun Fact, Edinburgh is further west than Bristol.

Note that on the 0915 Cross Country train above the railcard fare is only £44.60 each (so almost £5 cheaper) if you change at Stafford as opposed to Birmingham New Street (exactly the same trains) and Stafford is a much smaller and easier station to change at - scheduled as a cross platform connection

If you go through National Rail they will charge you £77.30, as they don't split it into two Advance Fares.

I always prefer a Stafford change if I can get it, as opposed to Birmingham New Street, both for ease of use and almost always a cheaper fare as in this case.

I am looking into booking the first train trip from Southampton to Edinburgh for Sat Oct 17. I am looking on the ScotRail website at the train leaving Southampton at 10:15 to Birmingham. Arriving at Birmingham at Plat 5 at 12:51. We then change trains with the next train leaving for Edinburgh at 1:03 on Plat 9A. That is only 12 minutes to change trains-I dont think that would be enough time to change trains moving from Plat 5 to Plat 9A. Would you all agree, really afraid to missing the connection.

I checked other train times for Sat Oct 17 and still run into that same 12-minute scenario, going from Plat 5 to 9A.
Other options are open but there is a service work alert on the other options for trains.

I wonder if I could book an earlier train at 9:15 from Southampton and arrive in Birmingham at 11: 51. Then book the train from Birmingham to Edinburgh at 13:03. Does this make better sense? It would sure give a better connection time.

Does a scheduled train trip that is cancelled by maintenance service work always switch to bus in England and Scotland?

Does a scheduled train trip switch to bus if there is service work on the rail line?

Yes, but with times now confirmed for 17 October there is no confirmed to be engineering work on those routes.

12 minutes is a legal connection at Birmingham New Street, and you can do it. However the station is split into zones, which makes it the more annoying. One time recently, I was changing there and was a bit on auto pilot. I ended up having to go through 3 sets of fare gates just to change platforms. Not sure how I managed that, as in theory two is the most it should have been, but the zones and sub division of the station is a bit annoying. If possible I try to avoid changing at Birmingham New Street.

However forget what Scotrail or National Rail is giving you, also get to Edinburgh faster and in more comfort by changing onto the 1207 Avanti service at Birmingham (Platform 6).

Bear in mind that platform numbers at Birmingham New Street are a game of bingo- they very frequently change. 5 to 6 is not cross platform but closer- 4 and 5 are an island and 6 and 7 are the next island.

After Birmingham the train from Southampton calls at Wolverhampton and Stafford.
At Wolverhampton it is a same platform change on to the same Edinburgh train (Platform 1), and at Stafford is a cross platform connection (6 to 5), so do what I would do in these circumstances if wanting a direct connection.

Book the 0915 Southampton to Wolverhampton Advance with railcard arrive 1217, £14.55
and Wolverhampton to Penrith with railcard depart 1230 £18.60, Penrith to Edinburgh £11.65- stay on the train at Penrith, or an Advance Wolv-EDI £47.25 (so about £17 more),
OR
SOU- Stafford arrive 1230- £16.65
Stafford (depart 1247)- Carlisle £14.30, Carlisle to Edinburgh £9.30 (stay on the train at Carlisle), or Stafford- EDI Advance £27.95 (so just under £4 more)

NOTE that if you travel an hour later (the 1015 from SOU/1303 from Birmingham etc, on the West Coast there is an additional change at Penrith or Carlisle for Edinburgh.
