We are taking a train from London Waterloo to Southampton on 8/30/25. We will have 2 large suitcases to take on the train. I wanted to know if there are plenty of luggage racks on the trains? If they are all full, where can we put our luggage?
Any other tips or help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Southeastern has luggage areas at the ends (by the doors) of most train cars. There are also overhead racks on some cars, although as I recall these tend to be smallish - more suitable for backpacks than large cases. There isn’t any under car stowage, like on buses.
If you only have 2 cases you should be fine. But you will have to compete with others for space, so try to board at a door where there aren’t other folks with suitcases.
I have rarely seen a situation where someone was not able to stow their cases on a train (any line) in the UK. I wouldn’t worry.
You could also upgrade to first class for more room. Buying a train specific Advance Fare that is an extra £8.10 on most trains that day. Apart from more room there are no other perks to SWT first class.
There are no luggage racks on that route. The train company considers it a commuter route and no-one carries luggage, despite the thousands who do just that to the cruise ports every year. So you will need to keep the luggage with you by your seat, out of the aisle so people can pass by.
Ck99. If there are no luggage racks on the London to Southampton train, is there room under our seat to put it there or at least put it in front of our seat and put our feet on top of it?
It’s Southwestern trains, not Southeastern.
I assume you will be travelling in the morning or early afternoon? If so, whilst there are no proper. Luggage racks there will be plenty of space for you and your bags. It would only be an issue in the evening rush hour
Hi Johnew52
Thanks for your response. We are planning on taking a train on Saturday around 10. We know that there are 5 cruise ships leaving from Southampton that day so thats why we are concerned that trains plus luggage could be an issue. Would we be able to store luggage in another seat or by our feet if there are no luggage racks up front of each carriage. I'm getting mixed messages from others?
Here is an option to consider. Instead of the train take a National Express Bus. The luggage gets stored under the coach out of your way and you are not having to worry about it at all.
