Train travel in England - we have returned

I should be putting this in the Trip Report section but I just want to thank all of you who gave me input on our train adventure. We always get rental cars so this was a first entire trip with the train. London to York, York to Liverpool, Liverpool to London. Husband even agreed that train travel works (he was opposed). We had a wonderful time - thanks so much.

I am pleased that all appears to have gone well. (Many routes will be getting new trains over the next 2 years - including all trains out of Paddington and the East Coast Mainline from London to York & Scotland).

Sounds like an amazing trip. Can't wait to read the trip report.

Hi Sharon - my wife and I will be traveling from London to Oxford then Bath and back to London. Would a car or train be the best option for this trip, in your opinion?

Hi drq... You will be traveling from London to Oxford, then to Bath and back to London. As I had mentioned in my post, my husband and I are new to train travel. We've always used rental cars so this trip was our first exclusively with trains. It worked well. When we went to Oxford and Bath, we stopped along the way to see sites. I've been told by people on this Helpline, that if you just want to go to big towns, the train is better. If you want to see small villages, get a car. So, my opinion, is that if you only want to be in Oxford and Bath, then take the train.

The train worked fine for me in that area. If you want to see some of the less-touristy Cotswold villages, a car is helpful. Otherwise, you can take a one-day bus trip in the Cotswolds from either Bath or Moreton-in-Marsh. Moreton is a very, very short train ride from Oxford.
