Hello all,
We will be traveling form London to Scotland via train. I have never done this before. I was looking online to buy tickets and they advertise cheap ones, but when I dome research it is over 100.00 per ticket. Does anyone know anything about this? Also how far in advance should I make the reservations?
Thanks
You can get an idea of when the cheap Advance tickets are available by looking at this web page
https://www.lner.co.uk/travel-information/travelling-later/early-bird-ticket-alerts/
we can give you better advice if you tell us your dates and where in Scotland you are going
You are looking too far out. Cheap (Advance tickets) on a weekday are only available 12 weeks before travel, or 8 weeks on a weekend.
If you travel on Avanti from London Euston to Glasgow (Hourly) or Edinburgh (every two hours) there is widespread availability for £35.
If you travel from Kings Cross to Edinburgh there are two operators. Lumo (run 4 trains a day from around £34), or LNER (run half hourly), fares between £45 and £60.
As it happens at the moment Lumo are open close to 6 months ahead and LNER about 17 weeks.
Both routes have their advantages and dis-advantages. It doesn't ultimately matter which you take if you are going direct to Scotland and not getting off in between.
There is also a night train from London Euston (not on Saturday night), run by Caledonian Sleeper- depending on what cabin you book that can be between £120 and almost £300. But you are saving on a night's hotel, so that is not (quite) as expensive as it sounds.
