train to Edinburgh from cruise port

I just received notice that my flight from SOU to EDI was changed to a very early time. The issue is that I will be getting off a cruise in SOU and had booked a 12:30 flight. Now they changed it to 8:30 and I could make it only with a miracle.

I am hoping they can move me to a later flight, but the one quite a bit later at 4:30 is sold out.

So, I am looking at the train from Southampton to London at 10:15 arriving in Edinburgh at 4:07. Can anyone else think of a better solution. I had hoped to have a half day in Edinburgh, but that is now out the window.

Thank you in advance.

You could consider taking a train from Southampton to Gatwick Airport - direct trains take around 2 hours for the trip and leave SOU hourly at x13 minutes. Pay on the day at Southampton station and the fare is £20.10. See:>https://www.nationalrail.co.uk

Easyjet have flights from Gatwick to Edinburgh several times a day.http://www.easyjet.co.uk
(Be sure to check baggage in hold fees).

Reject the change the carrier has offered. Get a refund, go to Gatwick or Heathrow and fly from there.

You don't say when this is, but the Southern Railway Southampton to Gatwick to London Victoria trains are said to be going to end with the timetable change on 2 June. After then it will be a change at Brighton, but there are lots of Brighton to Gatwick trains. It will just take a bit longer and be slightly less convenient.

EDIT- When you look it up the new train will be at 20 past each hour, changing at a place called Barnham, with 25 minutes between trains. Train specific advance fares start from £7 per person.

By the way I think the 1015 train from Southampton gets into Edinburgh at 1807 (6.07) as opposed to 1607 (4.07)?

Your faster and probably cheaper connection seems to be the 1000 to Waterloo, tube to Kings Cross then LNER to Edinburgh- arrive 1641 (4.41), or 1030 via London (arrive 1723)

To LHR or LGW is 2 hours or more, then 2 hour check in. Depending on flight times you may not arrive into central Edinburgh a whole lot sooner than the train.

There will be not much time between train and plane. I replied to the OP (I assume) on another forum, suggesting the 13.35 EasyJet from Gatwick, which I would imagine would have you in central Edinburgh by 4pm. So a bit quicker but for me a bit more hassle than the train. Maybe cheaper though. The flight is currently £39.99 although assuming cruise luggage quite a bit more for that as well.

Thank you all for your insights and recommendations. Another couple from the ship is also in the same situation and we are going to take the train via Birmingham from SOU to EDI. No airport hassles and extra luggage fees.
