Train Ticket - Waterloo to Southhampton

We are traveling to Southhampton's cruise terminal and plan to take the train from Waterloo to Southhampton on Aug 26 Friday.

I checked the train schedule and the cost of the ticket online. For the ticket price I see a cheapest standard and promo day single tickets costing 16 gbp and the off peak Day single ticket price for 39.70 GBP. I have read information stating that the cost of the train ticket is approx. 39 GBP.

How do I purchase or get the ticket for 16 GBP? Do I buy it in LONDON at the Waterloo train station from a ticket agent, or in London at the train ticket machine or online? How does it work and how can I purchase the least expensive ticket for our family of four traveling luggage? Should I just purchase it online now while it is available (assuming that if I buy it on Aug 26, I may not get the cheap ticket) ?

Any suggestions or help is much appreciated.
Thank you !!!

That £16 is an off-peak fare but you must buy it in advance.

I like the National Rail website for buying tickets. It will send you to the correct site for the train you pick. See if this will come through:

http://ojp.nationalrail.co.uk/service/timesandfares/WAT/Southampton/260816/0915/dep

This shows the array of morning trains that day. But you will need to start over and enter four people. Start here:

http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/

Enter the origin (London Waterloo WAT) and the destination, and the date. Then enter the number of people and hitnGo. Pick the train younwant and hit "buy". It is pretty straightforward from there. You will get a confirmation code that you use together with the credit card you used for the purchase to retrieve the actual tickets from a machine at the station. It all works very smoothly.

Thank you Lola, Mission Accomplished!
I purchased it on "thetrainline.com"
as the other website was having system bugs - I ordered tickets but it did not allow me to process payment info...
it was working a bit quirky.

Thanks again!
much appreciated.

They will have charged you a fee as they're a third party reseller, would have been better to buy from national rail or if having trouble the train operator website.
