I am scheduled to fly into Gatwick on June 6, 2018, at 3:30pm , a day scheduled for a train strike. I did buy National Express bus tickets just in case, but I would rather take the Airport express train, since it is so much faster and we have concert tickets for 7:30pm! Have the designated strike days been happening?
Jan, where did you get this info?
I looked on both the Gatwick Airport and Gatwick Express sites and can see no mention of any strikes due.
Or are you perhaps confusing this with the SNCF (French Railways) strikes which are due on 7th and 8th June (see here: https://en.oui.sncf/train/strike )?
You can sign up for travel disruption alerts about the Gatwick Express here: https://www.gatwickexpress.com/travel-information/plan-your-journey/service-updates . Scroll down the page and you'll see a link/button to sign up. You can also follow Gatwick Express on Twitter for updates.
Last year when in London I took the train to Brighton to visit friends, and for some reason (potential strike? engineering works?) I signed up for travel alerts from Southern Railway. I still get those emails, and although I could easily unsubscribe from them, they aren't frequent enough to be annoying. And it's a momentary vicarious trip back to the UK to see the Southern Railway news pop up in the email inbox. :-)
I second that I do not see any information on Gatwick Express about a strike. There is only engineering work on certain days that are indicated on the website
When I was getting seat reservations for my select pass eurail ticket on the continent, I asked the agent if I could buy a train ticket from Gatwick to London. He said he could not purchase one for that day, July 6 (ooops, in my first I miswrote, June 6). So July 6 is the scheduled strike day
I don't know of any strike on that day on that route.
There is uncertainty at the moment because Network Rail (the infrastructure maintainer) has not confirmed because they are on a short planning schedule.
I would be astonished if a mid-day midweek service would be interrupted.
Agree with Nigel - this was because of the late publication of timetables this year. Your agent probably got mixed up with the French rail strikes.
Former rail worker here (freight footplate and ticket offices for British Rail, Network SouthEast, WAGN Railway) and am in touch with former work colleagues. No mention of strike votes or pay disputes between management and ASLE&F (train drivers), RMT (general rail employees) or TSSA (salaried transport office workers) members.
This has me perplexed.
Whew! You had my heart racing. We're leaving June 6th for London, but to Heathrow! Glad to know you had the wrong date and wrong country on this post.
Janet, if you check the above posts (two from Railway workers - who should know), it was not just the wrong date, but compete misinformation from a ticket seller. Probably confusion with the French strikes.
