Will be in London in May and looking to take a train to Kent and rent a car at the train station. Any suggestions as to what Kent rail stations are most accessible from London and would also have car rentals at the station. Looks like Ashford International meets this criteria, but train service doesn't look that great. Suggestions most appreciated!
There are fast trains to Ashford International from St Pancras International, Southeastern Trains run from platforms 11-13 on the upper level of the station. There are also trains from Victoria and Charing Cross. These are slower trains and less frequent thann those from St Pancras, the journey from here takes about 40 minutes. It all depends where you are staying in ondon, but St Pancras is easily accessible it's on several tube lines.
Thank you Pauline!
Kent is a large county of about 1,500 sq miles and it will take about 2 hours to drive across. Where are you visiting?
Ashford has a better rail service than most stations in Kent, being served by the high speed line plus the slower commuter services.
Thanks Jennifer. Looks like Ashford International is a good bet. We plan on getting a car and heading out---Sissinghurst, Great Dixter, up to Hever Castle and sights in between before returning car to LHR a week later. Thanks...Ashford looks good.
Although the high speed HS1 trains that run from St Pancras are quicker (and more expensive) if you are staying near Victoria, Charing Cross, Waterloo East or London Bridge, it will be as quick to use these stations and the slower commuter trains, as getting to St Pancras will take 20+ minutes.
Good point...sometimes being 'faster' may not be!
BTW, any feedback on a B&B in your neck of the world named Danehurst House? thanks.
From another neck in another wood (Ohio), yes, we stayed at Danehurst House a few years ago. ( I was pretty sure of the name, but seeing the koi pond pictures clinched it ). It was excellent. Our room was very spacious and comfortable. The bathroom contained more “products” than we had ever seen before in our lives...lotions, soaps, etc. We still smile about that. Friendly hosts, easy parking in the yard or nearby on the street. Breakfast was large with many choices and served in a pretty garden room. There were a few options for dinner including a nice pub...could it have been The Red Lion? It was all perfect. We drove the area for a few days, visiting some of the places you mentioned. Danehurst House was a convenient base for our visit. Safe travels.
Thanks Denny! Just book our room there! Appreciate the info!
You’re welcome! I’m sure you’ll be pleased. Have a great trip.
