Hi,
First time traveling to England/Paris and will have my 14 year old daughter with me...nee to know info on trains. Best safest way...do i buy before or when i get there...get pass or single trip tickets? Thanks for help.
There is only one option, the Eurostar from London St Pancras to Paris Gare du Nord. Buy tickets at www.eurostar.com, they're available from six months in advance. There's no rail pass that will be an advantage. Advance tickets are the way to go, tickets for immediate travel are very, very expensive. The trains have airline-style passport and security checks before you board so arrive at least 30 minutes before departure time and preferably at least an hour.
No issues about safety whatsoever.
The Eurostar is the only way to fly. Easy service but buy ticket well in advance to take advantage of discounts for early purchase. If it is a weekend or a holiday be sure to get there at least an hour earlier. You do French immigration prior to boarding and a US airport type of security prior to boarding and the lines can be long. Generally with most trains there is little to no security check prior to board but the Eurostar is very different.
Everything you need to know about the Eurostar (which is indeed the easiest and best way to go from London to Paris), from rail guru The Man In Seat 61:
https://www.seat61.com/London-to-Paris-by-train.htm
You do not want or need a rail pass for a single train ride, any more than you want or need an air pass for a single flight. However, the tickets for this train go on sale about 6 months in advance, and prices go up as cheaper tickets sell out. So, you want to buy as soon as you know your plans (all explained in the Seat 61 link I gave you).
Now that we've convinced you to travel by Eurostar, I like to get to St Pancras Station in London about 1.5 hours before departure time. There are lots of shops and you can take food and drink (no limit like airlines on liquids) with you for the train so I have fun picking out my snacks or a sandwich for the train. I start thru the gates to the International departure area about an hour before my train departure, that way I am not feeling rushed with security plus Immigration to leave the UK and enter France. It also gives me a chance to scope out which escalator you'll go up to get to your section of the train.
You will have to manage your own luggage so make sure you both are taking suitcases you can each handle and can lift up 3 or so steps onto the train. There are luggage areas on each car. If you go to the site Harold linked there are diagrams of the trains so you can know where seats are located and how things are arranged.
Love taking the Eurostar. It was a piece of cake! We took the very earliest train in the morning. Fell back asleep once we got on the train and woke up in Paris!!!!
