Train from St Pancras to Dover Priory

I am looking to visit Dover Castle on a Saturday in July. I would like to take the high speed train which leaves at 8:37am from St Pancras station taking 1 hour and 5 minutes. Do I need to book tickets in advance or can I purchase them the morning of the trip? Also, I looked on the Virgin Train website that was suggested in another post and their prices are higher that the Loco2 or GWT websites? Why would that be? There are 3 of us traveling and Loco2 seems to give a group discount.

Also, we will be returning the same day in the evening. Do I need to specify which train or will open return work?

Thank you for any help.

I would book the ticket now. If you book them now they would cost £27.20 for a return ticket (round trip). If you buy them the same day you go the ticket would be £45.60.

The train operators always show the cheapest fares – if Virgin is showing a higher fare than loco2 then perhaps you’re not looking at the same tickets.

The train operator https://www.southeasternrailway.co.uk/ has Off Peak Day returns at £31.80. These can be bought on the day and don’t restrict you to a particular train.

Advance Single tickets are also available, which must be bought before you travel, but restrict you to particular trains; from £13.60. A Groupsave discount for three adults will reduce the above fares even further.
