Train from Manchester to Windsor ---enough time to tour Windsor Castle?

Hi All,

We will be in Wrexham to watch a game on 12/29. On 12/30, we are considering the [7:25 am Avanti or 7:35 CC] train from Manchester to Windsor, which arrives in Windsor at 11:26 am.

My questions: (1) Would we have enough time to make a 1:30 pm or 2 pm Windsor Castle tour ..... if so, is two hours enough in the castle? (2) We are considering staying at the Castle Hotel because it seems close to the castle --- any suggestions for others/reviews/etc?

We will head back to London on 12/31 to celebrate NYE.

Thank you!

The train station is pretty much at the gates of Windsor castle, so if you arrive at Windsor at 11:26, you'll have more than enough time to get a bite to eat; explore the town and take your tour at 1:30pm/2pm.

Windsor is a delight. I just love it. My first visit was in my early 20’s wearing my London Fog coat which was a big deal purchase since I live in So Cal. Walking in Windsor Great Park with my soon to be husband. Been several times since taking the family and I’m just always happy to be there.

If you take the Cross Country train that is direct to Reading, change for Slough, then change for Windsor.

If you take the Avanti train you have to cross London from Euston to Paddington.

I would be torn between Avanti being a much better quality of train versus the ease of a same station connection at Reading.

The Cross Country is much the cheaper train, so that would probably narrowly swing the balance for me.

When we stayed at the Castle Hotel in May 2023, we thought the beds were the most comfortable of all the hotels during our trip. We booked two “Classic Double” rooms. We also loved the location of the hotel. Enjoy your visit to Windsor.
