Train from London to Salisbury

I just want to make sure I'm not crazy or doing something incorrectly on these sites....I was told that the typical fare for the train to Salisbury from London - Waterpool was about 40 pounds per person. However, upon checking the advance tickets, I was able to get 2 Adults and 2 children for a total of 38 pounds (32 for the 2 adult tickets, 6 for the 2 kids). This was for what is called a "Promo Day Single" ticket and looks to be off-peak at 9:20 in the morning on a Tuesday. This same total came up on both the National Rail and TheTrainLine sites. Does that sound right to you experts out there?

Thanks for your help!

"if you book ahead you can pay much less"

Normally that's correct, but in this case it's not - the fares dinahmann has identified are Off-Peak fares, which means you can buy tickets at that price at any time, even on the day of travel, and there are no additional savings for booking ahead. Many UK train routes offer cheaper Advance fares, but the London to Salisbury route is not one of them.

If you wanted to leave earlier in the morning (8:20 or earlier), then you'd have to buy Anytime tickets, which would set you back about 40 pounds per adult and 20 pounds per child.

That is incorrect. Advance tickets are available for £9 - e.g. on 22 August.

Apologies for the error. Still, the fare difference dinahmann is talking about has nothing to do with purchasing tickets in advance.
