That's a long ride, so we recommend flying, unless you are stopping to see a few cities along the way, such as Paris or Brussels and a stop in Germany. See www.skyscanner.com for flight prices and see also Rick's overview map of train travel time and regular/full ticket prices in 2nd class. Train ticket prices will depend how far ahead you book them, with cheaper rates sold 3-4 months ahead for some legs. How to Look Up Train Schedules Online gives you the DB train schedule link and tips for using it, but doesn't sell the first ticket departing London.

Are you training it for the experience? We love train travel.including sleeping on the train. We would bring along a picnic and wine plus snacks and settle in for a nice journey. The stops, starts & noises of a train are no problem for me & my husband.

If I were to do it by train (and I would cuz I am a train freak) this is the option I would take:

Bruxelles-Midi Eurostar Th, 23.10.14 arr 18:05

transfer 17 min.

Bruxelles-Midi Th, 23.10.14 dep 19:28 3 THA 9473 Thalys
Köln Hbf Th, 23.10.14 arr 21:15 5

normal (international) tickets not valid, Subject to compulsory reservation, Global price, Book your tickets on www.thalys.com: Thalys-Hotline +49 1807 070707, (14 ct per minute from German landline, mobile phone max. 42 ct/Min.), Thalys Store+More in Cologne and Aachen

Transfer time 1:13 h

Köln Hbf Th, 23.10.14 dep 22:28 7 CNL 457 City Night Line

It is a 17 hr & 23 minute trip with a nights sleeping on the train - I would also go for the Deluxe sleeper compartment with ensuite.
