is the "chunnel" the best train from london to paris, and if so from what train station does it depart. thanks, nicholas
It is also best booked far in advance, up to four months. The closer the date, the higher the fare - and the highest fares are really quite painful.
OK, this is me being pedantic, but ... Isn't the "chunnel" simply the incorrect term for the Channel Tunnel? The actual structure? Then there are the various trains that run through it: freight, car/passenger trains (run by Eurotunnel), or passenger only (run by Eurostar)?
I'm assuming the OP isn't planning on driving their car from England to France, so they mean the Eurostar leaving from St Pancras. If they are taking a car they would leave from Folkestone, I believe.
Yes, the Eurostar is the train, the "chunnel" is the nickname for the structure it goes through.
Just as saying "Frisco" makes people in San Francisco very agitated (even though nothing derogatory is meant), calling it the "chunnel" has a similar effect on Europeans.
Everything you need to know about the Eurostar is here: https://www.seat61.com/London-to-Paris-by-train.htm
Cars can be carried on channel tunnel trains.
"Not sure why the name stuck in the US."
Because it's "snappy and slick".......;..As I was once told by an American.
Not sure why the name stuck in the US
For the same reason the clock, bell, and tower will always be "Big Ben" and not the Elizabeth Tower containing the bell of Big Ben.
