I have one day to explore the village of Hundon in Suffolk where my great grandfather was born in 1853. I’d appreciate advice on the best option for train travel back and forth from the Covent Garden ( near Leicester Sq. ) area where I will be staying. Train would be best but bus would be acceptable if it was simpler connections.
Hundon is a tiny place in a very attractive part of the country. It’s not easy to get to.
It looks as if your best bet is to get to Sudbury by train then get a cab.
From Covent Garden you’ll need to get yourself to London Liverpool Street Station, by bus or tube.
From London Liverpool Street, you can get to Sudbury in about 80 minutes, changing trains at Marks Tey. Once at Sudbury you’d need to find a local taxi firm for the last 13 miles.
You get today's price for an obscure destination.
According to Wikipedia (click here for article) it has a population of 1,894.
The nearest station is Sudbury, 23Km away. You would need a bus to get there. You can get a train to Sudbury. Look up times on the National rail website: http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/
Buses to places like this are limited. I would recommend a car, as this would give you flexibility.
Thanks for replying, I think I may need to have someone drive me on another trip to the U.K. I’ll be mostly with relatives around Chester and in North Wales so they do the driving there. As it will only be my 2nd time over I’m still too nervous to drive on the other side of the road .
Lorraine,
A very long time ago, I use to work in Sudbury, Suffolk and I have family still living in the area around Essex/Suffolk boarder. I actually had a house in Kedington, Suffolk which apparently is 7 miles from Hundon! - I just don't know why I do not know this village! I had to look it up. It must be a very small hamlet. This area will be hard to get to by just using public transportation. There are always buses that serve most of the towns but they take a long time to get anywhere (lots of stops) and it will take you all day. An earlier post mentioned Marks Tey on the Colchester train line from Liverpool Street. I am wondering if Audley End railway station near Saffron Walden, Essex (its south of Cambridge) may get you a little closer. Its 20 miles from Audley End to Hundon via Haverhill (a good size town). There will certainly be buses from Audley end going to Haverhill. Haverhill is about 6 miles from Hundon. (that would be doable for a taxi to take you there and return). It really is a nice area around there (Haverhill not so much!) but the villages for sure. . Audley end has a beautiful house to visit. Saffron Walden is a very nice town/village. Goggle Audley end House, Nr. Saffron Walden. I think you would really enjoy visiting this part of the country.

Thanks so much Margaret. I really appreciate all of this information. I did see some of the places that you mentioned when I looked on the map. I’m a bit confused as it seems to be a hamlet but wikipedia ( as another responder linked to ) says Hundon has a population over 1800. I know no one in the area. I just thought if there were easy transportation links from London that I would go and check it out. I’d like to look in the Ipswivh records to see about family members etc. as well . Now I think that I should wait until someone could drive me on another trip over. I just thought my 99 year old mom would be pleased if I found the village where her grandpa was born.
Lorraine,
Check out these pics: http://www.hundon-village.co.uk/pictures.html
it also has a Genealogy link!
All the villages around that area are fairly small. Hundon It is just a little more off the beaten path. Ipswich is a lot further away and you would be wise to do all this on another trip when you could take in the coastal villages Aldeburgh and Southwold. as well as Lavenham, Long Melford. Clare. Just beautiful countryside.
In checking out the best route - You could take the direct train to Audley End - but you would also have to take the 59/60 bus which would take almost an hour to reach Haverhill (not a very pretty town). Then a taxi. If I was doing this trip, I would avoid the bus - too much waiting around and stops. So, I would probably take the train to Marks Tey and change train to Sudbury as others have suggested. Then take a taxi to Hundon (about 12 miles). There are no buses that go directly to the village from Sudbury. (Sudbury is also a much nicer town than Haverhill.
Hope this helps with planning.

Thanks so much for all this great information Margaret ! It is much appreciated and I am still considering if I will have the time and energy to go after my almost three week holiday prior !
