I would love some help. My husband booked tickets for us to travel from London (Euston) to Edinburgh. We've never made this trip before and are not familiar with London or with traveling by train.
As I look over his reservations I realize that Kings Cross is very close by and I've seen references online to switching trains between Euston and Kings Cross.
Has anyone taken the train from Euston (versus Kings Cross) to Edinburgh with no changes? It's a longer trip (5+ hours) which also confuses me.
Thanks for any advice.
According to National Rail.uk, there are direct trains from Euston to Edinburgh (without a transfer to Kings Cross) departing Euston Station at 10:43, 12:43, and 14:43 ( and maybe more after that). The train takes 5.5 hours because it travels more inland, via Manchester rather than York, and makes many more stops than the Kings Cross service (14 versus 4). But it will get you there, don’t worry!
What kind of tickets are these? If they are 'Advance' with a capital 'A' then they are for a particular service and cannot be refunded and can only be changed for a fee and fare difference..
If on the other hand they are a walk-up fare (eg off-peak) they are most likely to be for any permitted route, so you could travel from Kings Cross or Euston.
Euston to Edinburgh used to have more services but because of the speed advantage from the Kings Cross route there aren't many left.
Thanks - that's very helpful. Unfortunately I think he got Advance tickets and from what I've researched the route can't be changed. So I guess we will just have to do the 14 stops and the longer trip.
I'm disappointed because I've heard the York route is more scenic. But hey, at least we will get there. Many thanks for the information and clarification!
It may well be because of the extra time taken that these tickets came out as cheaper when bought.
