Train from London to Conventry

Hello!

I will be booking only 2 train journeys while in the UK. One, is a round trip on the Heathrow Express. The other journey we need to get from London to Coventry - where we will see the cathedral and pick up our car rental for Wales.

We are staying near the London Bridge. I don't think that a Two Together Rail Card makes sense.

Should I book London to Coventry train tickets ahead of time? I will do that if it saves money. We need to head to Coventry on a weekday and we can go after 9 AM. I will be booking Heathrow Express soon to get the discount.

Thanks!

Looking at the National Rail website, it appears that fhe direct trains to Coventry leave from Euston station. And comparing the cost of a ticket for tomorrow to a ticket on the same train a month from now, it looks like a substantial saving can be had by booking in advance.

Tickets for the fast (55 minutes) train from Euston to Euston can be had for £15 for next week so I can’t imagine you are saving much booking ahead.

Also the HEX goes nowhere near London Bridge; there are better and cheaper options to get there from LHR.

We are staying near the London Bridge.

Is your hotel near the London Bridge tube station and were you planning to take the tube after the Heathrow Express? If so, the Heathrow Express is not the best option. It would be better to take the Elizabeth line to Bond Street and then switch to the Jubilee line to London Bridge.

For Coventry, if you are able to buy an ”Advance” ticket, you will save some money over a walk-up fare. An ”Advance” ticket commits you to a specific train. You don’t say when you are traveling so tickets might not be available for purchase yet. If you want to check prices, you can use the National Rail website.

Even with cheap tickets taking the Heathrow Express doesn’t make much sense if you’re staying near London Bridge. The HEX terminates at Paddington, which is 5 miles away. I’d take the Elizabeth line to Farringdon and then Thameslink to London Bridge.

For Coventry you can book cheaper Advance tickets as long as you ensure that you catch the train you book. Two rail companies- Avanti West Coast and London North Western Railway. Either is fine, the latter a bit slower but may be cheaper.

Thanks for quick responses!

When we use HEX we are doing so on the tale end of Wales and spending another day or two in London before we fly out. Staying near Paddington for the HEX to Heathrow journey :-)

Yes, I had seen that Euston is the station for Coventry and my grad student will be great helping get us around and using the trains and she was in London recently and for me it's been since I was 13 years old. I will dig into some research a bit more, but yes, I was hoping last minute deals would mean would could book closer to travel.

Just for completeness the Elizabeth Line also goes from Paddington to LHR

Depending how lucky you are Euston to Coventry fares start at £11 each way for Advance (train specific fares) on the semi fast hourly London North Western trains or £12 each way on the half hourly fast Avanti trains.
The cheapest fares to Coventry are the route specific fares on Chiltern from London Marylebone changing at Leamington Spa although they are hard to get.

Heathrow Express Advance Fares and then tube fares are cheaper than the Elizabeth Line, because the Mayor got greedy and increased Elizabeth Line fares by almost 14%.
