Train Engineering Work - car rental options

We currently have EMR tickets from St. Pancras to Lincoln on Sunday Jan 8. We were allowed to purchase with the caveat that there might be engineering work that weekend, thus no trains. (in addition to the rail strikes.)

I'd like to have a backup plan for a car rental, but I obviously don't want to drive in London, nor do I want to go back to Heathrow to pick it up.
Where would be the best location on the outskirts of London, accessible by tube, that would have car rental options? I don't even know where to begin searching.
Thank you so much.

Luton and Stansted airports are both north of London, in the direction of Lincoln. Trains to Stansted leave from Liverpool Street Station and you can get on at Tottenham Hale tube station too, apparently. Luton would be more direct, but make sure you go for a train that leaves from Blackfriars or London Bridge stations, not St Pancras.
You can Google all this.

The usual route from London is out of Kings Cross but that’s closed for engineering work on 8 Jan

So you’re left with a route from St Pancras but that too is affected by works

But that may be over by 09.00 on Sunday morning – you could be OK, but you need to check nearer the time (whatever that means)

If it was me I'd still plan on the train from St Pancras. If I really had to travel to Lincoln on that day I’d go to Stansted for a car (Luton is also affected by the line closures).

Thank you - very helpful information.
I'll look to rent something at Stansted and will cancel if we don't need it.

Would it be possible to move your train travel to Monday, Jan. 9, with the likelihood that the rail work will be over by then? Hiring a car just to go to Lincoln seems like a lot of extra trouble, if that's all you'd be using it for.

Another option: You could take a coach (bus) from London's Victoria Coach Station to Lincoln. It wouldn't be as fast as the train, but at least it would keep you from having to rent a car.

Seats on the coaches are new and comfy, far more comfy than seats on a plane. All the coaches have WiFi. It can be a relaxing journey, with good views of the towns and countryside you'll be going through. Read, take a nap. Much less stressful than driving a car.

there is a 48 hour strike on the Friday and Saturday, 6 and 7 which may run over to the Sunday, at least in the morning.
