We are planning our first trip to London in May - there will be 4 adults (my husband and I with our two young adult daughters). We plan to utilize the trains multiple times (including going up to Edinburgh) so I have been looking at railcards and other ways to save on train tickets. What is the best option for 4 adults traveling together? If I am understanding correctly, it seems that the "Family & Friends" card will not apply because we are not traveling with any children. So do we need two of the "Two Together" cards?
I also saw some information on the national rail website about "GroupSave" which also seems like it might apply for our group without the need to purchase a railcard. Is anyone familiar with this discount? Is it better than the railcards?
Don't overthink it, 2 Two Together cards probably makes sense. Easy to get easy to use.
If you book four adults on the rail operator web site and the GroupSave discount is applicable, it will be recommended automatically- no need for cards.
Group save on!y applies to certain rail operators, and notably not Scotrail. Although they have a slightly different scheme which applies to only a few routes in the country.
LNER, Avanti, Transpennine, Northern Rail and Transport for Wales for example are not in the scheme, nor is any open access operator.
So just buy the Two Together Cards.
Two Together, twice. It is worth considering who will be on each Railcard, as in order to get the discount both people on the card need to be travelling together on each journey. Maybe the two of you on one and the two young ladies on the other? Or one daughter per parent? Just worth thinking about.
In London you need to be travelling after the morning peak, after 9:30 M-F (no restrictions weekends and Bank Holidays).
Happy Travels!
