Tower of London Audio Guide question

I will be buying our Tower of London in a day or so and am considering the Family Audio Guide, to be used by myself, wife and our son. For those who have use the guide, did you find it worthwhile or more of a nuisance?

We had the best time with the Beefeater tour. I am not sure if there was an extra cost. Informative and funny. Our tour started out with about 10 people and by the end we had about 50. Go early. See the crown jewels first. You will be on a moving structure so they go buy fast.

I liked the audio guide but like they said above, the beefeater guide is well worth it. I used both because the beefeater doesn’t take you everywhere. And absolutely get there when it opens and go straight into the Crown Jewels so you aren’t standing in line for an hour or more to see them.

I personally found the audio guides a real nuisance on our recent trip. We only got them once and gave up on them very quickly (my husband is hearing impaired so they didn't work well with his hearing aids). Not only does it make it hard to hear what's going on around you, it makes others hard of hearing and people using them would just stop suddenly in front of us while walking and it was extremely irritating. We ended up doing our best to steer clear of people with headphones on. We found that people were walking around blindly looking at their audio devices and not actually looking at the real magnificence that was all around them. If you want info on what you're seeing, get the guidebooks when you book your tickets and look at them when you get home. They are also cheaper than buying at the door and are really good quality and wonderful mementos to take home.

Another recommendation for the Beefeater tour - our guide was so funny. And it was free - you just had to be at a certain spot (I believe on the bridge on the way in...this was 6 yrs ago now) and I think they go every 30 min or so.
