Tours from Bath

Hello again,

My husband and I have booked Bath from Sept 8-11. We pick up a car rental on the 11th (Monday) to head toward the Cotswolds.

We are looking at tours from Bath to see Stonehenge for sure but possibly other areas south of Bath (Glastonbury, Wells,Salisbury).

We are reluctant to take the tours that incorporate Stonehenge/Avebury/Cotswolds (appears many do this) as we are making our way to the Cotswolds (in Cotswolds 2 days). However maybe doing this tour would free up more time for us to explore Cotswolds.

Also has anyone booked with any local guides as I have seen a few …need to check out costs of course.
In your experience should I be pre-booking early or play it by ear when we arrive or closer to arrival?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Cheers,

KS

KS, we used Mad Max tours from Bath, including the Stonehenge/Avebury/Cotsowlds one-day tour. We highly recommend them. You wont see enough of the Cotswolds (only a couple of places on the southern edge) to do more than whet your appetite to see more. Just enough of Stonehenge and Avebury.

If you want to book a tour, I would not play it by ear. Book it as soon as you know you're going.

Thank You Stan,
I appreciate your advice. The more I look I believe this tour may be the best bang for our buck. The private tours as wonderful as they are cost more than our budget allows.

Also the Mad Max tour special access sunset tour does not appear to be operating in September. I assume due to sunset time then.

Thanks again,
KS

We did a private tour to Stonehenge last week and used Daniel with Bath Insider Tours (https://www.bathinsidertours.co.uk/). It was awesome and definitely a highlight of our trip. He may be able to customize a tour for you, but not sure. Worth an email.

We went to Salisbury on our own from Bath on the train - super easy and just about an hour ride. We booked an open return ticket so that once we were done and wanted to head back to Bath, we could hop on the next train.

I was in both Bath and the Cotswolds last fall. I took the Mad Max tour from Bath and took the Go Cotswolds tour from Chipping Campden. They were both terrific and there was no overlap in what I saw.

I took a Mad Max tour last September to Stonehenge, Avebury and 2 towns in the Cotswolds area close to there and enjoyed it very much. Our driver was very informative and personable.

Just a note that the two towns we visited on the Mad Max tour were Castle Combe and Lacock, Both were very lovely places, often used as film locations.

You could get your car sooner and drive yourself to the places you’d like to see. If your accommodation doesn’t have parking they’ll advise where you can leave the car. It’s easy enough to drive in and out of Bath on day trips.

@Stan, thanks for naming the towns in the Cotswolds where the tour went. Lack of sleep caused me to forget them.

Melissa H, thanks for the link to Bath Insiders. I recall there was at least one more tour company in Bath that I couldn't remember the name of, and Googling didn't turn them up. Thanks!

Thanks to all of you for your advice. We will be researching all options further. Doing a price comparison for getting our vehicle rental sooner and going on our own vs a tour company or the train/bus route. The private tour for the two of us is more than our budget allows sadly.

Once again, I appreciate all your help.

Cheers,

KS
