Highly recommend this tour group: white rose York. This is billed as a free tour but by the end of it, you want to give a donation because the tour was so good. Our guide gave an incredibly comprehensive tour. Learned so much
You don't need a tour guide in York, it is easy to do on our own.
I loved York.
Personally I didn't need a guide, but then I know enough about York, the Danelaw, the Minster, the region as the seat of power of the Percy family, the murder of Jews at Clifford's Tower in 1190, and the execution of 7th Earl of Northumberland Thomas Percy in 1572.
But, I'm an English history geek. I would never presume to tell someone else what they don't need, or need. And I would hope that a visitor would engage a guide to get more out of their travel experience -- especially when there is a hole in their knowledge.
OP thanks for sharing.
Good to know!
I used the free city-sponsored walking tour, https://avgyork.co.uk/ and it was also wonderful. While York is definitely easy to see on your own, the tour was very interesting and informative. Lots I didn’t know!
