To Reserve a Room or Not in November

Posted a while back about a trip in mid-November I'm taking and appreciated the feed back. So another question. i will have a car and be traveling north from London to Edinburgh. I want to go through York and then to Middlesbrough to catch the Middlesbrough/Chelsea match on the evening of the 20th. I will head north following the match (match should end around 6:00 pm (18:00).

My question is, should i book accommodations now or just travel north and find something "on the fly"? my problem is that i would like to get as close to Edinburgh that night following the match as possible, but know i will probably be tired of driving after a couple of hours and will need to bed down somewhere. i just don't know how easy it will be to find sleeping accommodations later in the evening if i haven't already booked them. i would like to at least get up to Jedburgh if that helps any.

also, any tips on getting tickets to teh Middlesbrough/Chelsea match. Can i just walk up and buy some from the box office or will it be sold out. any advice on this would be greatly appreciated too. Thanks ahead of time!

You absolutely need to buy Premier League football tickets ahead of time and they are very difficult to get hold of. Tickets for this match went on sale for season ticket holders first, and then on general sale by Boro a few days ago. As Chelsea are a "glamour" club I'd suspect they will have been in great demand and may well be sold out. Full details here: http://www.mfc.co.uk/tickets/tickets-travel/

Please be aware that fans of the different teams are segregated - so if you buy tickets from Middlesbrough you are buying for their fan section. Don't go dressed in Chelsea kit or cheering for Chelsea or you will be thrown out.

I'm afraid Premier League matches aren't the kind of thing where you can just roll up and get a ticket on the day.

I would take the train from London to York. Without a doubt. Then pick up a car in York.

I know you said you'd like to get as far as Jedburgh after the game. But there are some great sights on your way driving north from Middlesbrough. Durham is an interesting city, with an amazing cathedral.

Slightly north of there is Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, the eastern start of Hadrian's Wall. Don't know if you are interested in driving west along the Hadrian's Wall for awhile, but it is interesting. And very historic. You could stay somewhere along the Wall at a cool B&B for one night.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hadrian%27s_Wall

I guess my point is, there are tons of things to see between Middlesbrough and Edinburgh. I wouldn't necessarily be in a big rush to get close to Edinburgh the first night after the game. Edinburgh sights can be done in one day, so you will be looking for other things to do and see, anyway.

However, if Jedburgh is your goal for the night, I would make a reservation now for something there. It is much easier to do your research now and choose something using an internet search than to drive around at night in a town you are unfamiliar with searching for adequate lodgings.

I assume all your airline tickets have already been purchased. If you cannot get tickets for the game ahead of time, and attending the game is knocked out of your schedule (hope this doesn't happen), consider taking the train from York to Edinburgh. York is a two night stop at the very least, if you have the time to spare in your schedule. Lots to see; Viking stuff, Roman and medieval walls,
medieval buildings. More interesting than Edinburgh, in my opinion.

You will not need a BritRail pass. You will need to buy your train tickets online in advance. Buy tickets London to York. If you conclude you are NOT going to the game, buy a second set of tickets from York to Edinburgh. If you buy now, online, you will save a bundle versus the price if you walk up on the day of travel and buy. Of course, you can buy that way also if you are unsure of what your travel days will be.

You will not be able to buy walk-up football tickets. I'd go over to the Trip Advisor forums and post there about tickets, as there are some people who can advise you.

I would never go to London without having accommodations booked in advance, so I hope you're not asking about that.

I'd take the train from London to Edinburgh, unless you know specifically where you want to go and what you want to see. The first part of the journey, especially, is not scenic and this way you'd save yourself time and motorway driving. Also, you don't want a car in London.

I am assuming you want to go to York and Edinburgh after spending time in London. If that's not the case, then I am not sure I would fly into London.
