Coming from Paddington on the Elizabeth line to Canary Wharf, final destination Greenwich. I know we have to pick up the DLR somewhere in the area but I’m told it’s a bit of a walk. A person in our party can’t walk very far and would like to save energy for exploring Greenwich. Can anyone give me some advice on this?
Where in Greenwich? If you mean the Maritime Museum, its a 5 minute walk from Cutty Sark DLR station. Anywhere else, check the TFL journey planner: https://tfl.gov.uk/plan-a-journey/
Board the Elizabeth Line at the very rear of the train. At Canary Wharf follow the signs for 'DLR and Crossrail place'.
When you reach the exit turn right, go over the footbridge, then immediate!y left to West India Quay DLR. That is closer than Canary Wharf DLR.
FYI the climb up to the Observatory is a slog. Did it 3 weeks ago. If there are mobility issues I’d arrange for a taxi to take you from the DLR stop to the Observatory.
My route on foot was from the DLR station. Stopped at Joe & The Juice for coffee. Drank it there, then walked over to the Cutty Sark then followed a lengthy path up to the National Maritime Museum.
Enjoyed seeing https://www.rmg.co.uk/whats-on/national-maritime-museum/women-of-the-rnli.
Very well done museum. Nice gift store and took time to use the facilities.
Left there and followed a partially tree covered pathway up to the Observatory. Incline wasn’t too steep but depends on how fit all of you are.
I was born when Truman is in office and until a health issue curtailed my daily hikes in LA’s Griffith Park felt I was fit for my age.
I did okay on the steps up to the Observatory but did stop once to catch my breath.
Too many school children running around near the Prime Meridian but I did love the walk back the Greenwich.
I had been there 25 years ago so it wasn’t a disappointment.
As I advised take a taxi.
Do you have the Citymapper app? That gives very accurate directions including walking distances. I think you’ll find it really useful for your trip. Also consider using buses more. They may travel more slowly but you don’t have to do the long walks from ground level to platform that the Underground involves. The bus is right there and they have level boarding from the street - no steps. Citymapper has a bus only option to help you plan routes this way. And yes, taxis will be your friend.
For instance the Bus #188 runs every 10 minutes in the daytime (less frequently in the middle of the night) from the Cutty Sark to Tottenham Court Road (quite a sightseeing trip through South London, starts at the Cable Car at North Greenwich).
Change off that at the Aldwych for the #23 to Paddington.
That is two bus fares- £3.50, but you can do Waterloo which the 188 passes (and Victoria, changing at Canada Water) for a £1.75 hopper fare.
