Timing for Earl's Court to the British Museum

We will be arriving from Bath at Paddington at 11:14. I'd like to drop our luggage at our hotel near Earl's Court, then do some sightseeing. If we use the bus or tube, will we have time to get from Earl's Court to the British Museum for a 14:30 tour, or should we plan on a taxi?

I think you'll have time. You might even have time for a very quick lunch.

Do you know about this trip planner site :https://tfl.gov.uk/plan-a-journey/

It can tell you which tube line or bus to take to your destination as well as time estimates.

You have plenty of time to get to your hotel and the British Museum; the tube will be faster than a taxi.

Paddington to Earl's Court is about 10 minutes on the District Line.

Earl's Court to Russell Square is about 20 minutes and then you have about a 10 minute walk to the museum.

I just returned from London and we visited the British Museum. Pls note that there is a thorough security check to get inside the museum. At about 10 am we had a 20 min wait for sec ck. Other days we walked by the museum after 12 pm and the wait line or queue was at least 3 x as long as ours. So i agree u should drop off your luggage or perhaps store it at Paddington if poss.
And for sure take the tube there.

My general rule of thumb, developed long before the zippy and very accurate trip planner now available on tfl.gov.uk has been to find expected time on the Tube - allow 3 minutes per stop and 3 minutes to change lines plus a bit to get up and down which varies a bit depending on knowledge of the exact stations. So I would allow 10 stops = 30 minutes, no change because it is all Piccadilly Line, and no extra time at either end because both Earls Court and Russell Square are simple stations.

I agree that you should have time. The security checks at the British Museum are new, I didn't know about those.

I've just looked at what the TfL Trip Planner says - it is more optimistic than me, it says 17 minutes. I'd still leave half an hour to allow up and down time, waiting for a tube train, and walking to the museum. Get there a bit early and have a bite across the street.

Is this a tour by the museum or an outside party?

Thanks, all. This is a tour by London Walks as listed on their website, so glad to hear we will have time to meet the guide.

The 2.30 tour is only on a Monday, so that must when you are traveling.

Note that you meet your guide just outside the Russell Square tube station exit, not at the museum, and they will shepherd all of you through security.

Nigel, the London Walks website has the British Museum tour on Wednesday, Aug. 30, at 2:15. Is the website incorrect? We are coming in to London on the 30th.

We were at the British Museum in June and also encountered long lines for security at 10 am. However, only those with bags/handbags had to wait in the long lines, so if you can travel bag-free you'll have a much quicker time of it.
We used the Rick Steves audiotour and found that worked pretty well. He advises there may be exhibit closures that mess up the sequence a bit and we experienced that, but the staff were very helpful in getting us re-oriented. It helps to listen to the tour once before you get there, to make it easier to follow the tour.

Yes, there is one at 2.15 on that day. But your original question says 2.30 so I assumed that what you had written was was meant.

When you go with London Walks on The British Museum tour, you enter through the group entrance which has a shorter security queue. I just took this walk last fall.
